Hunters?
Submitted by darren monks on Sat, 2015-01-24 15:51
Being fishers I can assume hunting's a pretty popular pastime with some members, and there's been a couple recent threads about shooting?
I've done a bit of bowhunting for pigs and goats with recurve, but I mainly rifle hunt on foot, chasing deer and pigs. I also a bit of trapping (foxes, cats and soon - wild dogs). do a bit of spotlighting, but prefer walking.
recent annual trip to northern wheatbelt over New Year we got 5 pigs, pretty average.
2014 got red deer stag, fallow deer and lot's of cats and foxes and couple pigs
who else is a hunter, and for what, with what?

Goats and bunnies
Go out reasonably regular with a mate to knock over a few billies for his wolfhounds and some smaller ones for us.
Pretty partial to a bit of underground mutton so take the air rifle out and drop half a dozen or so for a bit of sport and to stick in the freezer

g'day carnarvonite.
you've certainly got good goat country. I've been tempted to head your parts after them, but as many are stock now it's not like the old days, and be hard finding access I assume (unless a local boy/knowledge like yourself). also I've been hearing reports about the wild dogs making a mess of Gascoyne goats in recent times?
there were always heaps of bunnies around Carnarvon when I used to visit quobba etc, and I assume this is still the case, but calici virus has certainly wiped them out big time around the Murchison/Northampton where I hunt.

hand up.
Been a keen hunter all my life, had a 12g when I was 16 in high school - how things have changed. Pretty must satisfied my bloodlust but still dearly love the lifestyle and sport. Won't see me more relaxed than when that farm gate closes behind me and I poke a high powered rifle (25/06)out the window.. Still got a few boxes to tick -hunted pigs a few times but haven't got one . I will pay good money to get free range deer. Best trophy for me was a huge male dingo at 2am by myself when pro roo shooting 350 kms inland from Carnarvon. (15 foxes one night in 2 hours Gin Gin way was cool too - 120 rabbits by myself arghhh need to get up the farm lol),. that's living!

Yeah I got my FA when 16 in 1986 in Norseman and instantly had grandad’s little .22 handed down to me.
I love my 12g as well (cheapo Baikal sbs).
Consider joining the WA branch of ADA (Australia Deer Association) if really keen on a deer?
Done very well on the big male dingo and the foxes.
Where abouts is the farm (very roughly) – Gingin way?

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamois
But when I lived in NZ we use to hunt most weekends, tahr, chamois, deer mainly red and fellow, ducks in season, rabbit and quail for fun. Shot a shed load of goats on contract. Thinking of joining a pistol club for recreation, past killing
Cabinet use to hold
.22 Lakefield
.22 Winchester magnum
12g Baikal single barrel
12g Mossberg pump action
6.5 x 55 Mauser
7mm Remington Magnum

NZ - the land of milk and honey for hunters and trouters.
I'd love to do a south island thar/chamois hunt, but maybe getting a bit old to survive an SAS carter course?

G'day Caughtup, sounds like some good outback hunting behind you. I visit Northampton at least once a year for pigs as well.
Having 3 alternative spots to visit and a bit of game variety like must be great Ryan C. I bet foxes hate your Tikka lol

G'day Wanderer. Have deer
G'day Ben. Have deer been seen by the farmer or in the area? or has deer sign (rubs, tracks) been seen if not an animal? if so, any clue what type of deer (red, fallow and rusa in WA)? not an easy critter to home in on.

best indicator for locating
best indicator for locating deer in an area from now (Feb-May) is tree rubs, as they are now starting to rub off itchy velvet, and will then sharpen antlers for fighting in the rut (april). a bit easier to find tree rubs than tracks more often than not. want any advice just ask. I've managed to find and shoot in a few different shires/regions.

Wanderer, feel free pm if
Wanderer, feel free pm if think I can help anytime mate. I have some great photo examples of WA fallow (most common deer in WA) and red deer sign. like rub trees, tracks, spoor etc that might help with any ID work you might stumble across.
around now is a great time of year to do a pre-rut hunt recon mission, scouting for deer sign, as the males are starting to rub/thrash trees now. when tree rubs aren't fresh they are so much harder to find. general rule is find the trees in february and you'll find that buck/stag in april.

Onya Habanero. bows are the ultimate. haven't got a deer on recurve yet, but my hunting mate has taken a couple reds on his compound. I've seen rusa when trout fishing, but access that area I'd imagine hard (but I haven't tried)? Good one!
