I hate platypus line

Hi all

I was new to alvey reels a couple of years ago when i bought my first one. I now have 3. Because alvey recommends the use of low stretch line, I always bought platypus lo stretch for all 3 reels as it was the only one that said low stretch on the box :P

After two years of being snapped off by small tailor on 8kg, small sharks on 15kg and last night on a small bronzie on 24kg lo stretch, i have had it with this line.

If i bought 1000m of 24kg tortue, is that going to explode my fibreglass spool when i hook up to a shark?

I read a forum post about a guy who used 15kg berkely big game and his reel exploded 10 minutes after spooling it.

I like alvey reels but i hate lo stretch platy.

Dont want to kill my spools using random line.

What would be a suitable alternative for 600m+ of 24kg?

Thanks

With Alveys you do tend to get alot of line twist. Using quality ball bearing swivels helps alot in maintaining your line. So does storing it correctly. Leaving your rod and reel in the sun will eventually see your line break down from UV rays. Mono line in particular has a limited lifespan. It might be that the line is not suited to what you are doing. After all it is a pretest line and probably suited to spin and overhead reels. I always used schneider line for beach and rocks and found it very reliable. Some of the other Platypus products might be more suitable for you like monoflex line.

The other thing is worn or chipped guides/runners/tip on your rod will decrease the strength of any line regardless of what it is. Checking these with a fine tooth comb every so often might reveal a prob before it happens. Same with the spool lip on your Alvey.

Thanks for letting me add.

I use the 20lb for main line, fluoro green stuff ("Pretest", I think . . . ?), I find that its great, though I don't think it's low stretch, rather this stuff can handle alot !

Run 15kg trilene on my alvey no probs... But in saying that I wouldn't recommend winching a ball of seaweed in without pump and wind or you will pop it

when you lay line on too tight wet when it drys it'll shrink and pop she goes. Just gotta pump and wind

many big sharks caught on alveys over the years and many guys still rate them ballooning as u can pitch bigger baits out

Run platypus pretest yellow on all my troll setups, trilene  green or yellow on my 24kgs

Yep

Yep, low stretch is crap, have always used Big Game or Trilene with no problems.
As most reels, Alvey have good points and bad, if I landed a large shark on it, I would unspool a few hundred metres at home and wind it back on to ensure no distortion problems on the spool .

Platypus platinum for casting

Fri, 2016-01-08 16:41

Platypus platinum for casting I use 50lb and for ballooning I use trilene 50lb I find this to stiff for casting 30 lb may be better i have 2 deep spools and a normal spool all up graded with Teflon washers worth looking into mate

Low stretch mate had same as you snapped all the time even on casting but platinum no worries 8 oz's and a slab

 Thanks all. I ordered some

 Thanks all.

I ordered some tortue but in the mean time, i put 300m of $7 kmart jarvis walker 50lb line on over about 200m of lo stretch that was still on my reel.

Hooked up to a big ray and this stuff would not snap. Full drag, pumping the hell out of this ray to get it off the bottom. The lo stretch wouuld have snapped in the first minute of hooking this ray.

To be honest, for these small sharks, this cheap kmart stuff is probabably all i need lol.

Mono fishing line recommendations;

Sat, 2016-01-09 12:51

For gamefishing - Sten hi-vis gold and green. We stock Platypus Pretest for people wanting that line also.

General fishing - Berkley Biggame and Maxipro etc

Alvey/reef/rock fishing with lo-stretch we've had no problems with Platypus lo-stretch and another line we have been selling for many years with good results is Tortue Control.

I didnt like platy lo stretch

Sat, 2016-01-09 14:40

I didnt like platy lo stretch either had knot issues and some weird fraying. I think platinum went ok tho (few years ago). Im not against platypus lines tho.

I got bulk spools of cheap penn mono 50lb that has served me well for a few years now.
