Mon, 2014-08-25 20:31

Hird has served his time, now he is back. The bomber faithful will welcome him back until it is proven we took performance enhancing drugs and players are punished. Hopefully Bomber stays as well. I think we saw from the recent court case what we were fed by the media and AFL last year was very very carefully controlled leaking of info to paint a pre determined picture. You seem to have bought it just like they hoped.

I dont think Hird get's it

Tue, 2014-08-26 08:06

Lets not forget that as the coach he is responsible for the young men in his charge. I  think he still thinks he has done nothing wrong. But possibly 40 "kids" in his care have been subjected to "experimental unproven" drugs.

Would you be a happy parent if one of your children develops a serious illness as a result of these chemical injected. If this was my children I would be ropable.

If I was Bomber (and this IS a super coach) I would run as fast away from the club IF Hird gets the gig.

Hird's not a bar on Bomber as a coach.

not a fan of the bombers or hird . think this saga is dragging on for way to long ,ASADA the then Demetriew needed to put up or shut up ,if they had or have the evidence then shut them- him out of the game for good ,why 1 year suspension and for what!  , instead all they are doing is shaking the tree waiting .waiting to see what falls out ,why is it ok to be tested positive and only on the 3rd. occasion will they take action ?

Tue, 2014-08-26 10:41

This clown Hird still can't accept the fact that what he did what wrong. It's the whole act of getting players to inject themselves whith whatever substance. It's not the point of what it was. Imagine you are a young 18 or 19 yr old player wanting to do your best at the club, along comes Hird and co telling you to inject yourself with said substances, you're not likely to refuse as you don't want to risk an AFL career. The twat should be hanging his head in shame and crying mea culpa. Leave bomber Thompson at the helm in my opinion, a great coach, player and leader at the club, and they will get back some respect in the eyes of the fans and the wider footy viewing public. JMO

Tue, 2014-08-26 11:02

Hirds defence was that at the time it wasn't a banned substance. Players are taking pills, powders  and getting shots left right and center these days, so you can't say oh these poor kids. Remember Leigh Matthews used to have his players hook up to a drip when they'd come off for a spell? Nobody cried for his head, the afl just said don't do it again. I think the main problem was that at the time the afl was not governed by the world anti doping laws as it was too strict for afl players to adhere to. Ie no cortisone injections 24 hours before a race without prior permission etc etc

EDIT: for the full list -https://wada-main-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/resources/files/WADA-Revised-2014-Prohibited-List-EN.PDF  _ and this ruling certainly came into effect between 2010-11. So was banned in 2011-12.

Any pharmacological substance which is not addressed by any of the subsequent sections of the List and with no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use (e.g drugs under pre-clinical or clinical development or discontinued, designer drugs, substances approved only for veterinary use) is prohibited at all times. Seems pretty clear to me that the "stuff" Hird and his bunch of drongo's "injected" fit this category.

Given $1000’000 and a 12

Tue, 2014-08-26 12:52

Given $1000’000 and a 12 month holiday , done the time but got paid for the crime  .. what a joke !!

So at this point in time , so far as i understand .. the main argument revolves around legitimacy of procedure in having evidence used , if that gets thrown out ASADA has got nothing .. then they have to decide whether to start from scratch or dismiss it .. it’s all lawyer gooblygop to complicate the situation .

Keep it simple I say .. Hird and staff were deliberately negligent in their duty of care for their employees .. they should’ve all been stood down and should consider themselves fortunate not to face charges of sorts in a criminal court .. they knowingly pushed the boundaries and failed to guarantee the health and wellbeing of players . It’s not that hard to work out is it ?

Ultimately it may be up to the Essendon club members ,  if they want to live with the stench that won’t go away with Hird at the helm .

Bomber is a good coach , however he was also on board at the time .. maybe senior players should also be pinned but the young blokes should not be penalised .

I feel somewhat hypocritical however , as I’ve previously given the auskickers red snakes at half time .. but that usually just makes them play chasy around the goalposts

Unfortunately

Tue, 2014-08-26 14:01

If Hird (and others) get away with a slap on the wrist then it potentially can open up that arguement in future cases. They did it and got away, so why cant we.

Cycling was a joke not long ago, but have (almost) cleaned up their act. I now watch races again after avoiding it for ages.

I personally not even a native Aussie (been here since 1978) would hate this great game tarnished by a stupid act by a few, that can damage so many.

Yes - I hate drug cheats and would ban the lot off them for life if I had my way. Sets a bloody bad example for kids if they get away with it, and I am not just talking AFL/NRL clubs.

Oh: and Chris - red snakes HAVE been approved for human consumtion!!! Thats the difference.

you know me cransy , when I was playing aussie rules at a fairly high level we were encouraged to scoff down a pack of LLC,s before a game which were a licorice flavored cough lolly the thing is they made you breath so much easier wondering if that was cheating as well . would apeciate your opinion cransy , think it was but we didn't know

No Peter I wouldnt think so

Thu, 2014-08-28 11:23

But!! There is a certain medication called Spironolactone which is related to Licorice, that is banned as it is a "masking" agent for other drugs. It is a diuretic and the whole class is banned. Just ask Warny as he used a diuretic for "weight loss" and was charged. Because it is a lollie and approved for human consumption I would be very surprised if anyone would get slapped for LLC's.

If you are an asthmatic for example Ventolin makes you breathe easier and isnt banned. I also think a non asthmatic breathes a little easier using Ventolin.

And you cant use Mega doses. They can test for this, and if the dose is very high still ban you unless you can prove a Dr prescibed a high dose. Same as Caffeine as Alex Watson (modern Pentathlete) can well remember.

few things that stick in my

Wed, 2014-08-27 10:58

few things that stick in my mind with the whole saga.

Essendon say they no records of what players were taking and Dank has this.
Dank say Essendon knew what players were given and Essendon had records of this.
Talk of Demetriou tipping off Essendon.
Dimetriou is a lawyer and appears to have taken the harm minimisation path before.

So questions I have is where are Essendons records, have they been destroyed (if so what was on them that they had to destroy and who told them to do this) all done to minimise the harm to the AFL brand!!

(call from dimis to Essendon - hey look we have this problem and its gonna look bad for all of us, here's what we do - shred the records and we'll give you a minimal penalty for governance issues so the club and AFL don't cop it badly for drugs in sport cause that's not a very good look).

I do have some questions regarding Dank's credibility (though what he has said has been consistent) but it sounds real strange to me for the club to employ him or anyone else and not have any records about the supplement program their players were being given and if they don't have records that a pretty extreme "governance issue" in my mind!!

Yes the weapon Dean Robinson and his mate Danks

Wed, 2014-08-27 23:49

were playing around drugging the Geelong boys long before they got to Essendon

Dean Robinson was signed as Strength and Conditioning coach in 2007.

After week 5 of that season Geelong went on an unprecedented run, losing only one game before winning the Grand Final by 119 points.

After this Grand Final win Dean Robinson singled out Stephen Dank as worthy of praise for his role in the Geelong win, through the information they shared with one another about strategies for improving player performance.

Geelong, with Robinson still as Strength and Conditioning coach went on a run that could have given 4 flags in 5 years if not for the upset on Grand Final day by Hawthorn in 2008.

During this time commentators constantly referred to the ‘Strong Geelong bodies’ and how ‘tough Geelong players are to tackle’.  Teams that played Geelong often saw their own coaches in post-mortems after the game complain that his team needed to get stronger and bigger, ‘more mature’.

Geelong had an amazing run with injury during this time, losing basically no key players for extended periods of time.   In fact when you go back and look through the injury reports a remarkable number of players are listed as test-picked in side indicating better than expected recovery from soft-tissue injuries.  The majority of major loss of time injuries for Geelong in this time were Collision type injuries and knees, this may be the same for all sides, I didn’t check, but it is certainly true of Geelong.

From 2007 and 2009 Geelong became the only team in history to win 18+ games in 3 consecutive seasons, all with no major trades or signings and no high draft picks.  Other than Ablett and Selwood this was practically the same team that finished 10th in 2006.

When Mark Thompson went to Essendon he took Robinson with him, Robinson then brought Dank to town.

Pick up the papers to see how that has worked out.
