Japanese Rubyfish

Hi all,

If you have followed the discussion of the ID of this fish here,  I have now written a piece for the WA Museum blog, and of course FW gets a nod.  You can find it on the WA Museum blog page and of course, nice comments on the page are gratefully accepted .

I'm posting here because it is a long weekend and the weather is looking promising for some crew to get out wide.  If anyone can catch one, we'd love a donation......

In case you can't be bothered with the links (but please do...) it looks like this (from LukeR)

Cheers,

Glenn

"From all reports, this species has a very dark coloured flesh and does not make a good table fish"

As Ben said - no good to eat, and since this is the first record for WA - no idea where else they are found...

something to think about?

Something people might want to consider if they catch one - given it looks a lot like a ruby snapper issues might arise trying to argue with a Fisheries officer back at the ramp that its actually a Japanese Rubyfish which doesn't count as a Cat 1 / High Risk fish.  You might want to check your bag limit before deciding to ice it just as a precaution?
