Jigging Noobie

Hi all.

Managed to score a new Eupro Tango Jig TGJ-S562MH rod and Penn Spinfisher 650SSM reel for my birthday. Will use it for bottom bouncing the five fathom bank etc, but also keen to give the jigging a crack. Any suggestions/pointers for my first try? Be good to hook up on something with a bit of weight instead of the usual catch of KG's, flathead, skippy etc.

Also scored a heap of vouchers from a big chain store, so will look to stock up on braid (was thinking 30lb?) and jigs etc. Almost a shame cause I was planning on making the trek down to Oceanside. Still, there's always next time!

Cheers,

BD.

Jigging

Hi mate,

Good to see another FW member wanting to become a keen jigger. The back edge of Five Fathom bank has fish to offer that will strip line from your new outfit. Target depths behind FFB in about 14m and deeper. If your boat size restricts you to how far you can go out than the depths of 14-20m are good. Just use small jigs like 40-65gm depending on your drift speed. Use fluro carbon leader about 30-60lb and away you go. Target lower lying ledges and nuggets.

Shame about the vouchers being for elsewhere though if you want demersal jigs come in and see us as we stock the appropriate jigs that alot of chain stores wont. As for the Braid the 30lb mark will be a good start for you. If your feeling a little more sporty then down it to 20lb.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice, no doubt I will have to pop down and have a chat with you guys. The boat should get me out where you describe, shame the next few days are looking a bit breezy. Anyway, I'm keen to give this a crack and see how things go, hopefully be able to tell you of my moderate success soon, and no doubt you'll get me onto bigger & better things.

I'm guessing the target species would be snapper & sambo's, anything else you would think would be likely to pop up?

Cheers,

BD

No Worries

Next weekend might be a goer if the wind drops out a little more. This time of year the Pink snapper and Sambos are your key species aswell as breaksea cod. There is a chance of dhuie mixed in too though more so during winter is when they move in closer.

You may see birds working similiar depths and its always worth doing a quick troll with small skirts for Southern Bluefin Tuna and Shark Mackerel.
