Jigs and SP's at night

Hey guys, can't remember if this has been raised before but was just curious about peoples experiences with using jigs or SP's at night. Any success?

A mate of mine raised this with me the other day and I had no idea how it would go. I would think SP's would go OK, dunno about jigs?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

Yeah, quite a few on both at night, and maybe only a couple on a glow jig, the rest just normal lures.

Yep

I have caught quite a few specie of fish on jigs , lures and softies at night, I remember big John landing a Murray cod on a lure at about 11 o'clock on a full moon fish was about 900mm long and about 10kg's or a little more.

I have found the Berkerley Gulps with the scent (and other scented SP's) works best but like all SP's you work them slow on the lightest jig head you can, fish can see pretty well at night and they can home in on a scent or a lure (simulated wounded fish) with ease, some of the best times land based fishing GT's up Exmouth is with big blooping poppers that make a lot of noise , they get smashed just after the bloop usually.

All you can really do is try them yourself and see what happens for you, it may surprise you.

They sure do work

I use plastics all the time at night or early morning while its still dark and generally have good success.

Mainly use the glowing gulps( Nuclear chicken) and the likes.

Have caught all sorts on these pinks, dhuies, skippy, sambos, king george, small whaler sharks , cutttlefish and even the odd octopus.

What i have found makes a big difference is the use of a #5 white owner soft glow bead placed in front of the loop knot. this gives the fish a focal point as most fish will see this as an eye and will generaly take it headfirst. this has improved the hookup rate  substantially.

hope this helps

Been told the glow bead thing

Thu, 2012-06-21 19:41

Been told the glow bead thing too, it worked for me on a non target species before the sun came up, Im guna try the glow gulps next, and keep coating the lure in sent/taste stuff while its dark.

We have found the darker and murkier the conditions, the darker and murkier the soft plastic. Have caught pinkies and dhu in almost pitch black with both dark green and pitch black soft plastics, non scented.

Thu, 2012-06-21 23:57

was actually out on a mates boat, for a night sesh a while back. decided to give the plastics a crack (since the baits were doing any damage) used 7 inch white glows accounted for two sized dhu's! just goes to show you its worth giving a crack. Going to try some tomorrow night on a small reef close to shore doubt ill have any luck, ill let you know.

That glow bead seems interesting and a very handy tip might have to give that a shot myself!

Be interesting to see if octa jigs work at night too

demersals on artificials .

Fri, 2012-06-22 08:06

Tyson is 100% on the money there with what he has said, i personally use the gulp nuclear chicken 7" jerkshads to but i have found the trick is to slow it right down so the fish has time to find the slow moving plastic. I generally dont find that large hops or eradic retrieves benifit me at all infact quite the oppistite , its usually smalll hops followed by long pauses the go. Flouro carbon is a good thing aswell i generally dont find that over 40lb is neccesary (and believe me i have seen some rippers landed on 40lb leaders).

Other items that will improve your chances 10 fold are:

Glow beads , as have been previously suggested , but make sure they are good quality as they seem to put out a stronger glow.

Uv torch , you cant fathom the extra brightness they put into the glow of the plastic / bead / jig head.

Glow paint, this can be picked up locally for next to no price at all and it saves you carting beads around so just paint your jig heads and away you go.

Glass beads, i know this sounds silly but when you are painting your heads  with glow paint like i do i put 2 or 3 glass beads above the plastic as every time i hop the lure they make a clicking sound as they bang together acting as a bit of a rattle , and this i believe has improved hit rates.

and most importantly of all i think a good burley trail of mullies and pellets is always a good thing .

Hope this helps some what

As people have said Gulp do

Fri, 2012-06-22 11:16

As people have said Gulp do work well at night, particularly with little or no movement, but this is because they are bait!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Fri, 2012-06-22 13:22

Agree dk, Gulp are bait so does not count as a true soft plastic.

If its all about the challenge........go non scented full plastic.......nobody said it would be easy though!!!!!!!!

gulp as a bait?

Fri, 2012-06-22 15:48

Is there any reason  a great thread that was extreemly informative and productive had to be completely ruined by bogus claims and digs on an aperent cheating method of fishing? GOOD GRAVY really ? it comment like this that are unneccesary and have no truth behind them that are leading a great site in the wrong direction...

SP and Jigs at night

Fri, 2012-06-22 15:10

I have used almost the whole colour range of Mcarthy 7inch Bullhead minnows and the Zman 8inch XL Plastics at night on Dhufish and Pink Snapper to good success. Including some ripper sessions inside Cockburn Sound on the Pinkies with Ryan. Found the bright colours worked very well just on sun down and darker more natural colours as it went darker. Slow retrievals worked best including dragging and bouncing along the bottom. As for Jigs at night they do work. Anything with a little bit of glow will produce. Had a surprise the other week when i was using the light stuff mucking around with Skippy at night and my 40 gram IMA Gun jig got inhaled by a small dhuie. Give it a go and the artificials will work at night for you.

Cheers Blake
