Jurien Bay and Sounder advice

Hi Guys,

Went out off Jurien bay Saturday morning with no spots just hoping to find fish.

Came across a cray pot so we decided to sound around it and this was what the sounder came up with in 38m. We pulled up 4 dhuies off it all between 50 and 65cm at once. Was very cool to have a four way hook up on dhuies. Great fun. My mate Russell pulled up the first dhu and released it immediatley so he had time for another drop. When Wham!!!!! he got smoked by this 12kg dhu on 15 pound with a $50 ebay reel. Thought it was going to explode at one stage but it did the job. Once all these fish were up we had two more drifts and couldnt catch a thing. They must have gone off the chew???or spooked them???

Found a couple of other pots and managed 2 baldies and a 60cm Black ass. Was a good day out.

Just wanted to get some of your thoughts on how my sounder is set up and your observations on the type of bottom we were on.

First sounder pic in 38m seems to me to be on sandy bottom with no real structure, the bottom is just flat and red (my guess is sand)? i can presume they were dhuies by the fish we caught. How can I tell if the were seperate fish or bait fish as well????

They second pic in 83m seems to be a corally bottom with only small bait fish??? not sure?? does the red in the middle mean one solid fish?

Is this the correct gain for this depth? what are your thoughts guys. It is a furuno 620 with a 600w tranny.

Thanks for your help.

 First photo- Flat hard

Mon, 2012-08-20 11:49

First photo- Flat hard bottom typical in the 40m

Second photo-i would call the same fat hard bottom / limstone cabbage weed.

Shit Reading really, you could have a play and get in marking alot better than that,

You have your range at 60 / 100 meters-With those settings basically it`s just telling you how deep it is you wont read the bottom.

Cheers boomer

Furuno 620

You are running a very low gain (2.7).  I fish in the 30's with 5 on my 620.

Also I run my range at about 15m and then use the shift button to get the right window of bottom trace. The shift function is found on the "function" button on top of the gain knob.

Hope this helps

 I wouldn`t say they are

I wouldn`t say they are fish, i reckon it just a second echo as there is no anomalys - it following the same shape as the marking below

 - the left hand side of screen - bottom lock is a zoomed in picture of the right screen without the bottom contours ,  set your range at 20fa/40m bottom lock at 0-3fa/0-6m this will give you the best alround reading- after that its time to play with- Pulse Rate, Gain, TVG etc. i have the 585 with 600w trans (basically same sounder) and am more than happy with how it reads.

These sounders are capable of picking up sand holes and subtle weed edges when set correctly- i have taken my maxsea programe off the crayboat and compared the 585 sounder reading with ground that i know intimately and was surprised with how well they mark up ( for the price ) these sounders read better than your average weekend fisherman will ever know.

Cheers Boomer

range

with your range you should set it so it reads every five metres then use your shift key to get to the bottom! this will show so much more detail! ( i have my shift key set on the function button) the top sounding is a good school of fish! slightly high for my likings but still good! your gain could come up a slight bit. the second shot the gain is way to low i would be having it up around the six mark. once again if you had the range set up the detail would be so much better! and the school could be sambos or small pinkies! i found hundreds of them out there over the weekend! you done well i couldnt find a dhuie over 6kg but the baldies were like blow flies!
