Karratha Mud Crabing

Hi all,

I have just moved to Karratha for work and expect to be here for a very long time.  I watched a fishing show the other day where they were hooking for mud crabs.  I am very interested in catching a few mud crab this way, that way i can keep the mrs happy as she loves them.  Can any one tell me where to go around Karratha to go hooking for mud crabs?  And also if there are any decent creeks around the area to get a few, as I am keen as to get a few.  Thanks everyone

People often hook a few

People often hook a few muddies at back beach.  Take heaps of insect repellant and a lot to drink.  you may be walking / searching for a couple hours

Anywhere there are mangroves, you have a chance.  They also can be found at low tide out on the flats in the depressions / puddles.

Last time I went to Maitland,

Last time I went to Maitland, there was signs up on the track saying Keep Out, Heavy mining vehicles.  We ignored the sign and thought we would sneak in hoping not to get busted.  Anyway, we were not the only ones there.  About 6 vehicles disobeyed the signs.

Also, the creek crossing

Also, the creek crossing could be a bit sticky around the spring tides.

I make up 200mm2 bait pouches

I make up 200mm2 bait pouches out of tough green plastic mesh, fill em with rotten smelly old bait or something. Tie to cord, put some rocks in for weight and toss them in the drink (preferably where there is not too many snags). Leave it for 15 mins then check it by SLOWLY dragging it back in a little, if theres a crab hanging onto it for dear life you will feel the extra weight. Then gently bring it in till its close enough to get it with a rake.

Have used this method around the cape preston area successfully. Usually have about 4 pouches spread out along a stretch of creek.
