Karratha/Onslow

Looking at heading that way down the track saw a add in a old wa fishing mag about a house boat but the web site is no longer up was just wondering if some locals could help me out. Is there any house boats still operating that are in range of good fishing grounds or even island camps. whats the best time of the year to head up i would say tides would play a big part would have wives and kids so need it to be family friendly.Just looked like a good idea saved towing boats all the way add i saw had two boats that came with the deal is any thing like this still available up that way.

Dampier

I also seem to remember reading an article in an old Western Angler about a houseboat operation in Flying Foam Passage out from Dampier.

The Mackerel Islands Resort out from Onslow used to provide a 12 foot tinny with each beach cabin supplied. They may still do, I'm not sure.

Google 'Mackerel Islands Resort' to find some info.

As for weather, I'd say April/May (but shite its been windy this year) or August.

There are a couple of houseboats moored a stones throw away from the public ramp in Dampier but I'm not sure if they're private or not. As far as the houseboat in Flying Foam goes, I haven't seen that for years.

Dampier houseboat hire

Sat, 2009-05-23 12:02

This WAS a great place to stay unfortunatley the guy who run it let it get into disrepair and then I beleive he sold it to one of the burrup industries up that way a couple of years ago and is no longer for hire, I also contacted one of the previuos owners of a houseboat at rosemary island but he said non of those where ever for hire just private use.If you find one let us know as we have been searching for smoething similar ourselfs up that way.

Used to belong to Sean Throssel

He has sold it to a private guy. The story was about Melissa George (X world champion pole vaulter) and her family and yes it would have been cool. No longer available. Sean now owns the ICON restuarant in Karratha (Nice big feed). It was not run into disrepair it was all about public liability etc. The usual crap!

You can still camp but have to take everything onto the islands and bring everything off including human waste. Some are protected so check before you camp. And dont camp near peoples shacks.

Hope this helps and we were talking about exactly that before your post came up.

Yes it was

It certainly was run down, I've been on it and people I know have been on it a number of times and there were things going wrong all the time and he never fixed them from year to year
there where still things wrong (the same things)4 or 5 years after I went on it that where never repaired he was also a bullshiter he would tell you all sorts of rubbish like the faults had been fixed and they hadn't he did renovate the kitchen etc one year but that was it. If he kept up the maintainance it would have been perfect. I suppose it depends on what you expect for your money I would expect the lights to work and the toilet to flush instead of constantly having to use the plunger and the shower to work properly and the freezer to not leak and flood the kitchen floor for over $3500 for the week.
