kill tank plumbing
Submitted by mickypap on Wed, 2013-05-29 12:28
hi guys
Im trying to plumb my underfloor kill tank to the back of my boat, I want it to be open at the aft of the boat so water can rush in and drain out easily but i want to be able to block it off at the kill tank end from the inside like a bung. problem is I cant find a bung to mount in there where I can attach the hose to the back side. has anyone had this issue before or can suggest any ways of doing in that are as practical and good seal like a bung would? it is a ally kill tank bout 3mm thick walls.
cheers
micky

valve
you could take your drain hose into the kill tank and fit a valve (stainless steel) close to where it comes in, then its only a matter of opening and closing the valve to suit. My boat has an ally bit of pipe about 32mm that runs from the kill tank straight out the back all welded. Most bungs can fit inside this.
Otherwise go for a much larger size hose

yeah mate the only problem
yeah mate the only problem with that is it wont drain out properly, I kinda want it to be flush and right down the bottem of the tank. iv found something that i may have to use from bla, its not what I wanted but apparently im dreamin.

and then just use a rubber bung

Nipple
I think to get what you want then you need to weld a 25mm nipple sticking out of your kill tank plumb it with the suitsble size hose and ss hose clamp, then just fit any standard bung set over the top of the nipple entry in the kill tank side, wouldnt cost you much to get that welded up

I don't have a kill tank so
I don't have a kill tank so this is all pie in the sky stuff to me (its on my wish list).
Is putting an external shut off valve at the stern an option?? not knowing the design of your boat, it may be too far too reach, but what about an external hose with either a shut off valve that you can lean over and operate manually, or a hose long enough to connect to a retrieval line that you could pull up above water level once the tank is empty, or leave loose so it is under water when you come off the plane and the tank fills as you slow???

be careful using a flex hose
be careful using a flex hose with only a bung on the inside at the tank. Any leak or clamp failure and its adios....
Trailcraft are set up as you describe except with solid ally from tank to transom-works well but I wouldnt trust your setup unless at least with a cock or bung at the transom.

tank
yeah good point Rob, mine is also solid ali the whole way through, a leak could fill your hull pretty quickly. This may cost you a bit more mickypap, maybe send Sea-kem a pm on this site he does all sorts of fabrication from what he has told me and being fishing minded he might have some good options for you

I've just kept mine simple
I've just kept mine simple guys.Big bung in the bottom of the kill tanks. During the day we drain the tanks and use the bilge to pump out the dirty water. Drain the boat at the ramp and flush the tanks. never had a problem with smell in those it's just the bloody carpet!

Is it an ali or glass boat?
Is it an ali or glass boat? On glass boats all below deck live wells/kill tanks would be sealed to the underside of the deck then have a thru hull drain, to fill just stop the boat and pull the bung. To drain leave the plug out and move forward then plug the bung back in while moving. This system is great when you fish live baits on long trips, have kept bait alive for over a week in this type of tank. Why do you want to attach a hose to the back?
