kudos to the Fisheries Dept.

I know on another forum post the Fisheries Department were getting bagged for non attendance..
But it was great to see the boys out and about off Rotto yesterday checking boats.
That was the first time I have been checked in 3.5 years. (with exception to the VFRO's back at the ramp)
Yesterday it was a boarding and checking everything from catch to safety gear, skippers ticket and release weights..
Like I said it was great to see them out on the water. Just wish there was more funding to get more officers out and about on the water back at the ramps and on the land based spots.

Did they actually check the fish? I've seen them twice out there but they were mostly concerned with safety gear than checking fish. At west end once they asked to see our fish and we just held up some dollies (but they werent overly interested, you probably could have hidden fish at the bottom of the esky).

Had no fish on board at that stage
But they checked the esky's and even the storage area at the back of the boat.
Pretty thorough and good to see !

of the 3 times i've been checked it was much the same, safety gear, skippers ticket and ask about the fish but not actually boarding the boat to do a check. the most recent time was 4 weeks ago when i was sambo jigging. They asked about our catch we told them we didnt keep anything and that was it! At least they were out there i suppose.

Hi Ya,
May be making myself look stupid here but ...
Are you guys sure they were Fishewries guys? Reason I ask is that I thought DPI - or is it Transport - guys would be interested in skippers tickets and safety gear but can't check the catch whereas Fisheries guys can check catch but not skippets tickets etc.
Cheers.

Checks
Are fisheries now doing the role of the old M&H as well?
I don't mind them checking but I thought it was a seperate section and authority?

mmmm
I was out and in Dec fishing and just out side west end, got stopped and it was the fisheries guys, seem like nice blokes in a simular boat, asked if I caught and wanted to see the fish, also, release weight and asked if I was across the new regulations... didnt even ask for safety or licence, that time we had a dhuie on aboard and as it was way oversize I can understand they didnt need to measure it, also why lie and hide anything in the boat...

Got checked twice at Two
Got checked twice at Two Rocks yesterday. First was on the water, about 15nm out (the vessel has twin 350hp Yamaha's and flies btw). And also at the Ramp, was very good to see, but as others have said could have been a lot more thorough. ie didn't even check the kill tank.

Mud crabs
Heard from a good source this morning that 3 blokes got pinched with in excess of 24 mud crabs here very recently.Tried to land the boat by the old prawning jetty then realised too many people then shot off with one bloke in the car to the main ramp, discovered the crabs in the boat and surprise surprise,no nets.Seems they have crab traps hidden or they raided some one elses traps, either way its still illegal.Fisheries are continuing their inquiries after handing out something like $1500 for each on paper for the offenders so far.
