halogen are good, hids are great and leds are even better. I picked up a lightbar from ebay for 300 and a wiring harness locally for 100 and its awesome light. Bear in mind lightbars in singular form are still currently illegal in wa.
Lightbars don't throw huge distances but have a 180 degree spread, lighting the side of the road which I think is better at spotting roos. My lightbar is 32 inch and 180w. I had halogens before and the lightbar is least 10 times brighter. My mate had hids and they are nearly as bright but throw a lot more distance, but not so much to the side.

Halogens will do about 800mtrs at a stretch, HID's will do 1200 - 1500mtrs, LED lightbars/spots will do 600mtrs, at a push. Now LEd will give you an intense spread light, 30-40mtrs to the side of the road. What we generally set people up with is a set of pencil HIDS to cover the distance and a LED light bar to fill in the middle ground and spread. This covers all the lighting they need. For just under $1200.00 is awesome value. $600.00 for the HID's and $500 odd for the light bar. light bars are not illegal in W.A. but states they must be in pairs on your vehicle, most people get some electrical tape and wrap it around the middle so that it designates the light bar as 2, if this makes sense. Most ops turn a blind eye to a lightbar though as long as you do not operate them on local streets etc. On the beaches and bush and country driving they are cool about them.

i have a set if lightforce 240 blitz hid and a 32" lightbar

they do different jobs

hids are distance and lightbar is spot.

if your gona buy spotties either hella 4000 or 240blitz lightforce

I bought a set of standard narva 225's (225mm diameter), which you can get with a wiring harness for about $250-$300, then put a 55w HID upgrade kit from ebay ($90). With that being said, I have seen the 225 HID narvas on special before, for $450 including wiring harness. 

Results are unbelievable. One pencil beam and one spreader. Can X-ray Roos 200m away. Mine are over 2.5 years old now, and still going strong. 

 If it's a new 200 series I would go two pencil beams HIDS as the high beam on the cruiser have a pretty good spread. I run the IPF HID and just the normal high beam that combo works great IMO. 

bought a pair of 55W HID's off Ebay (7") for $90 delivered on my Hilux, 6 months later they still go awesome.

But, watch the colour temperature, mine are 6000 and are shitty in the rain and for reflection from highway signs. Id go 4300 I reckon

get yourself a pair of Fyrlyt Driving Lights you wont be dissapointed they are heaps better that lightforce are made in Adelaide I have been running a set on my car for the last 3 year doing some serious long distance driveing they have never failed me still running on the original globes look them up on the net or give them a call ask for either Peter or Paul they are the owner / designers of these awesome lights

 as they will out last the lightforce spotties 3 to 1

With regards to pencil and spreader, I had an auto sparky say best to get one of each rather than 2 pencils?

As mentioned, didn't want big look at me spotties and in chrome (quite a lot of different brands don't make chrome ones)

Lightforce 50W HID 240 XGT

 IMO go for drive without any spotties and see the how good the standard lights are and then make your decision. I've got two pencil beams on mine and had the same on my 100 series. Light force look shit on the cruisers IMO and Hellas and IPF look the best. 

 Another thing I would recommend is to go the steel roo bar. I've hit two roos with and alley bull bar and both times have done $6,000+ worth or damage (both times were in the day time). 

 I went through this last month for my new Ranger ,what I ended up was the arb led intensity spots with hid upgrade to the ranger lights.Intensitys are the most expensive option but there are plenty of cheaper manufactures.theres a good article to read on the net where a fourby club test over 30 difeerent light combos as well as lightbars

 just out of curiousity, why would you buy an expensive set of (say) Lightforce halogen spots-then fit a HID kit to them?

Arent you throwing out brand new bits and left with a brandname casing and lense/reflector which has cost $400+?

Im probably missing something but not sure what?

 intesitys are a led light with a 475 metre 1 lux distance but wth the hid upgrade $180 for the ranger which shoot 800m but more pencil style
