LB Sambo
I wish it was me bragging about this capture but I'm posting this on behalf of another angler and with his permission.
We were slowly driving along Preston Beach mid Sunday morning after an overnight fish and we were checking out how people were going as we cruised. We came across a guy who was gesturing that he was hooked into something big. After stopping to give some encouragement and help if needed Adam said he was feeling huge head shakes from the fish which was peeling off line at a rapid rate. He called it as a bronzie... wrong!
Adam managed to turn the creature and skillfully worked it back towards the shore in between shorter runs. 200m or so down the beach the fish surfaced in the wash. At first it looked like a shark but as we got closer the outline of a hulking Samson Fish could be seen in the clear water. Figuring the sambo would be released I threw the long gaff back on to the beach as Adam washed the fish onto the sand with no help needed.
It went 143cm and bottommed out his 22kg scales.
Fantastic to see a young bloke enjoying the beach with his young family and getting the rewards of long hours fishing.
Outstanding beach capture Adam. Well done mate!

Top effort.
That would keep the keen factor up. Preston is a tough place to fish at times, well done.

I should have mentioned that
I should have mentioned that Adam spent 20 minutes or so in the water with the fish after its capture but unfortunately it showed no signs of recovering. This pic was taken after all efforts to revive failed.

great fish off the beach
great fish off the beach that's for sure
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Thanks
Hi guys, I signed up just to say thanks for the kind words.
It certainly was the catch of my lifetime. I'm a little sore across the sholders today but its a 'good' pain.
It was a real disapointment that I didnt get to see this amazing fish swim off to fight another day. I've read up a little more on handling the species and if I'm ever granted the opportunity to catch another I hope to turn an amazing catch into a sucessful catch and release. The fish wasnt bad eating. No trace of mushiness, mild flavor but it was little too firm and chewy for my tastes (spoilt by coral trout and jacks I guess) but my family and dinner guests loved it.
For the techniq'ophiles (I'm one) my rig was western graphite ozflex (SU400), shimano big baitrunner LC, 50lb power pro -> swivel -> 1m 60lb fluro with running sinker on easyclip -> swivel -> 1m 80lb wire snelled to a gang of three 10/0 hooks. Bait was fresh skippy fillet.
Thanks again to Formerathlete and his Texan buddy for their help and encouragement.
Cheers
Adam

Knuckle dragger
Adam is now a member of the "knuckle draggers' club because after the work out he got pulling the sambo in I bet his arms were about 2 foot longer.
Well done, any big sambo shore based is bloody hard work.
