Looking to change to Low Profile Baitcaster- any suggestions???
G'day,
Im thinking of changing my baitcasting setup for this years barra season to get a bit lighter and better capability to cast a range of lures and SP's. Ive currently got a Cacutta 200B and a Calcutta 400TE. The 400 is an awsome reel for trolling and live baiting but the 200B is a bit of an awkward size. I might look towards the Low Profile reels. Possibly Shimano or, worst case scenario, a Daiwa. Anyone get any recommendations or any one used one of the higher end Low Profile baitcaster?
The Curado seems to be quite a popular reel and being used on some charters it should be able to take a few hits. The Daiwa Zillion with the 7.1:1 wind ratio would be great for a variety of lures, especially around some structure. And it has a pretty good line capacity and decent drag.
Any info is much appreciated.
Cheers.

Curados/Chronarchs are not
Curados/Chronarchs are not bad, Zillions/Daiwa Zs are good but in my opinion for casting 1/4 to 3/8 oz soft rubbers and small to medium barra lures you can not beat the Abu Revo Premier for weight, casting and drag out of the box. I own or have owned all these reels and fish them hard.

How would the Abu handle a big barra?
Whats the drag like on the Abu's? First baitcaster I ever had was one I bought with my first paycheck when I was 11! Lasted me for years till a seal ripped it off the wharf at Stony Point in Vic. Starting to look into them and theres SOOOOOOO many Low Profile reels!!!!! Ill have to have a look at the Chronarchs when I can get into town.

The HLC is a nice reel but
The HLC is a nice reel but bloody hard to get, I have one of them and both PE models and up until recently the type R as well, the Alphas type R would be good too, Antares or Calais DC are great but I'm not too keen on aluminium gears, the Abu Revo Premier outdoes all these in lots of different ways including weight, castability and smooth Carbon weaved drag out of the box, the drag may not be as high as some of the others (certainly not as high as some of its other Revo models) but I,ve never had trouble with big fish yet, I don't fish any of my reels in lock down (pull too many hooks) but still fish them around 3.5-4 kilos so there's plenty of drag available. Don't get these mixed up with the round amabssadeurs, a much better quality product. They feel too light and weak but hooked up they have a great connected drive train and cast beautifully, I've got mine on a Loomis NRX JWRC 803 and it's my go to combo when casting, I've caught 50 or more barras on it so far with the majority of them going in their 80s and 90s and it still feels great.

Oh if you want a tougher more
Oh if you want a tougher more "come here" now type baitcaster have a look at the Daiwa Zs (the 200s and 2020s), they're ball tearers, I only use mine if I'm fishing tight cover. Much the same feel as a Calcutta TE but much better to cast with and hang on to all day.

I use Revo SX matched with a GLoomis. Also use a Daiwa Ballistic which so far been mint.
Motackles have the Curado's on special I think for around $180 which is a good deal.

Anyone used the Zillion J Dream?
That Digitaka site that was recommended from another post has it for a pretty good price. Any good rods worth recommending to put any of these on? I prefer to use something around the 6'-6'2 range for casting out of a boat. Ive got an Ian Miller Raider 4-8kg already for it but if I get the Abu might have some left over for a new rod... Im tossing up between the Abu and the Daiwa at the moment. The Abu does stack up similar in numbers but 50 grams lighter. Similar drag and line capacity.
Thanks again for all your help.

The J Dream seems to me to
The J Dream seems to me to have only limited improvements on the standard and type R models and is more like a collectors item I reckon. Still makes it a great reel just a bit overpriced, there's also the Calais ASV which has a Phosphor Bronze gear and pinion if you want to stay Shimano. The longer rod is certainly a good option with the Team Daiwa-X MH 4-8kg 6'4 up there for value for money. Otherwise something from the Loomis range would be good say a CR723 in the IMX, forcelite or GL3.

A great reel for their price
A great reel for their price but like so many others benefit from a carbon drag upgrade, had one for a couple of years and sold it to a mate, still going well.

Shimano Calcutta TE 250DC. I
Shimano Calcutta TE 250DC.
I have 2. They are by far the best baitcaster I have ever used. They have digital technology in them for the backlash settings rather than the old magnetic inertia style. Lures that used to be too light to use on my baitcaster setups are now castable.
The Calcutta is a round style reel similar to the ones you have already used and a very well made reel too, but if you really have to have that low profile style I think the shimano Calais DC is the same thing just in a low profile.
They come with a big price tag too.

cant fault the curado
cant fault the curado about 2 models prior to the latest or the calcutta 50b. Look up my Fitzroy river post from around this time last year. My mate borrowed my curado the entire trip while i had the 50b. Got the boys at oceanside to give them some love before we left and they never missed a beat. Best part of 8 hours a day flicking or trolling lures + copped a belting from the barra. Still using the the curado off the boat for sp's or flicking small poppers. The 50b ive scaled right down to 8lb as my son has decided at 7yrs of age that this baitcasting caper doesnt look so hard. Both super versatile and built to last.

A Loomis looks like a decent match
I think I might settle on the ABU Revo Premier, thanks Daisy. Looks like the stats line up well. Found one in the States for $223. Damn fine price. Got some extra $$ after a Dream Team league win to pair it up with a CR 722 IMX. Bit lighter rated than the CR723. Thanks everyone for your help and advice.
