Losing Picture in Shallow Water
I recently bought a Furuno 627 and P66 through All Boats and Caravans.
Rhys set it up for me after I had to return it due to a bubble in the screen and the first time I took it out I had to reset the unit as I couldn’t get a good picture or a depth reading and this fixed the issue.
I was driving out of the Serpentine River last week and thinking I'd messed around with too many of my settings I did a restore again and once I set it all back up I couldn't get a picture until I got into 1m+ water and now I am struggling to get a picture or even a depth reading in shallow water under 0.7m. Once I got out into the estuary it was fine but when I came back into the narrow Serpi River channels and the river itself I kept losing picture.
I had the same issue when I pulled into the boat ramp at Bayswater yesterday, I turned off the engine to see if it was engine related and it still struggled to get a constant pic. I rang one of the Taylor Marine technicians last week and he suggested that it may be due to how I trim the boat but yesterday I had the boat sitting dead flat in the water with the engine off. The day before I did the second reset I drove along the exact same section of the Serpentine River and through the same channels and did not lose picture or depth at any stage so I can’t see that there are any problems with the transducer and resetting the unit was when the problems started occurring.
Driving through shallow water is one of the times I need a depth reading the most so do any of you have any ideas on what would have changed when I did the reset and more importantly how to get a reading at any depth back.
I bought Furuno because I was told and read that they are the best on the market however I am finding my unit (or my use of the unit) to be somewhat lacking and I am struggling to see why I have no problems at 1m depth but the picture drops out once I am in shallower water.

When you say "loose the picture"
Do you get anything on the screen at all, or is it you can't get any bottom location with depth.
I think if you can post up a picture there a few people on this site that will be more than willing to help you.

Should be able to see bottom
Should be able to see bottom in that depth. Have half a chance of seeing something before you hit it.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

There's a good chance it's your range. I had exactly the same thing happen last week with my 620. Exactly the same screen too. Check your settings in the menu.

Two issues here
dude,
you have the range set to high. As tim Said above, It's on 80 mt. You need to knock it back to 5 mt. The bottom is there, I can see it on the image, it's just that small you can't distinguish it between bottom and noise at the top of the screen.
also, take it off dual frequency. In water under 80 mt, maybe even a bit deeper, you should be using 200 kHz, especially when on the move.
the 50 kHz is for deeper water and is no good in shallow at speed.
Furuno are one of the best, it's just that you need to make sure you thoroughly read the operators manual and then some to get a good understanding. I've had a few and still only know 25% of what there is to know.
cheers

Forgot to mention
that the reason you may not be getting depth digits, is because you have it on dual frequency and this may be hindering the ability for it to do so. Guarantee you will find it works when you just have on on HF.

Yeah it's set on auto range.
Yeah it's set on auto range. I'll try changing it to 5m next time I'm in the shallows to see if that makes a difference
