Lowrance date issue-pissed right off

So the GPS date rollover has rendered most if not all Gen2 touch and non touch units useless until Lowrance software engineers push the Krispy Kreme box aside and get around to pushing a couple of buttons.
Only as recently as a couple of months ago we had another date issue with these, and it took them 4 months of scratching their ball bags before they got around to sorting it.

You would have thought they would have dealt with this issue at the same time.
Unfortunately they couldnt be bothered, maybe they saw a surge in sales last time and thought this would be a great idea for marketing?
Not this black duck, Id look long and hard at purchasing another Lowrance product, ever.
Off to the Abrolhos day after tomorrow, wont stop us going, just make it a bit less convenient.

They are telling me it is rare for it to affect anymore than the date alone, but mine wont get a fix at all.

It can see satelites and thats all.
Not sure if they are just glossing it over but last time similar happened 4 months back they said at first no-one else had complained about it, until I found it on Google...

Mon, 2019-04-08 21:55

 Hey Rob

my HDS8 gen 2 seems to have the same problem as you did. Has yours been resolved yet ? I have downloaded the GPS legacy patch and that seemed to fix the date and it was all AOK on Sunday but checked today, can’t get a fix. Can see 8 satellites but keeps searching to get a GPS fix.

im going to call Lowrance tomorrow to see WTF is going on but would appreciate hearing if you have had any luck as well.

cheers

Jump onto Lowrance  and register, and in about 3 months thery'll get around to doing something.
No resolution, Ive reinstalled the legacy patch

Seems strange it would only affect certain units.

got this of hull truth

Mon, 2019-04-08 15:08

The Hull truth.
GPS date rollover affects older GPS units
BY BEN STEIN · PUBLISHED FEBRUARY 22, 2019 · UPDATED FEBRUARY 22, 2019
On April 6th, 2019 older GPS units may experience a range of problems because of a limitation in how they handle dates. Those problems could include not being able to receive location data. It turns out the way dates are stored in older GPS units has a rollover event every roughly 20 years and we are about to experience the second one since the GPS constellations came online. The rollover last happened in 1999, but in the last 20 years the use and dependence on GPS has increased dramatically.
The Department of Homeland Security has published a bulletin on the upcoming rollover, as has the Coast Guard. Both bulletins make reference to a new GPS spec (IS-GPS-200) that deals with these rollovers gracefully. Unfortunately, the bulletins also warn that not all implementations of the new specification work properly and some GPS units might be prone to trouble either at the 4/6/19 rollover or later.
The underlying problem stems from the way GPS units store dates. The original specification for GPS had dates stored by week in a 10-bit field (2^10 or 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2) which is 1,024 weeks. 1,024 weeks is 19 years, 36 weeks. Dates for the GPS constellation start at midnight on January 5th, 1980, so the first rollover occurred on August 21, 1999. Now, 19 years and 36 weeks later the same thing will happen again on April 6th, 2019.
Furuno has stated their units will experience the rollover on March 17th, 2019, almost three weeks earlier than the published date in the notices. Furuno has a list of affected units as well as information on how to cold start the units to restore location information. It appears the date will remain wrong but the location services should function correctly. The affected units appear to all have been introduced in the early 2000s and ended sale around a decade ago.
Raymarine has posted to their forum that they are confident most of their recent hardware (Axiom, a/c/e/eS-Series MFDs and Raystar 130 & 150 GPS receivers) are unaffected.
Garmin has published a support article indicating they don’t expect trouble for their units as long as they are running current software.

 WGS84 from memory.
Patch was there this morning, I downloaded it again?

Lowrance said to "update" it back to the previous version which I did, no change

In contact with them in the US and here at Navico.

They have been very helpful asking alot of questions and pics of screens etc.

Still hoping they come up with something but not looking good.
At the end of the day though their management didnt bother to sort a known upcoming issue and left us in the lurch.
Can I ask how many others here cannot get a fix, as opposed to just incorrect date?

Tue, 2019-04-09 10:09

OK - I just got off the phone from Navico.

After performing a soft reset and a couple of other quick diagnostics the Tech made a call up the chain and it appears that they have stuffed up the original GPS patch and that is why we can see satellites but can’t lock on for a fix and is therefore why they have removed it from the Navico site.

According to the Tech, they are working on the Patch to correct this shortcoming. I asked how far away and he was a little vague, saying only that they are currently working on it. When I pushed him, he said maybe a couple of days.

Keep an eye on the website for an update and hopefully a fix.

Update

Tue, 2019-04-09 13:35

Got it working, with wrong date though

Mike at Lowrance US asked for pics of everything from satelite screen, boat to show its outside, SD card contents etc.
Then after a few emails came back with install the older previous update, still nothing.

Then-try deleting all the other files off your SD (the legacy patch and zip file), and it fkn worked...

Wrong date but my boat is no longer in Oklahoma...

Islands tomorrow without going blind-yeah boi!

Was still going anyway, as itd force me to look at new spots, but my luck Id find something good and then cant save it!

 The big issue with Boeings

Tue, 2019-04-09 19:28

The big issue with Boeings situation, is that they didnt TELL any pilots or put it in the flight manual that the MCAS system was even there.
If they had been told, they would merely have had to touch the trim control and it'd be disabled.

 The problem was also damaged

Tue, 2019-04-09 20:37

The problem was also damaged pitot sensors giving false readings. Understanding what happened in the cockpit is critical to determining which safety changes are required to prevent the future loss of any additional aircraft. New reports, however, paint a damaging picture of how the MCAS system behaved. Sources speakingto Reuters have stated that the MCAS system reactivated even after being properly turned off. The system may have kicked in as many as four times before the aircraft crashed, though a third source who spoke to Reuters stated both that the system hadfired up again after being manually disabled, while also saying it had only triggered in one “significant” episode.

The Wall Street Journal reports a slightly different sequence of events. It states that the pilots initially disabled the system (following Boeing’s recommendations) but were unable to regain control of the aircraft. The system was either manually reactivated by the pilots themselves as part of an absolute last-ditch effort to recover the aircraft or came back online automatically. The WSJ points towards the former conclusion, while Reuters appears to have heard the latter. Either way, we now know the pilots reportedly disabled the system properly, yet were either unable to regain control of the aircraft after it had activated or unable to prevent it from activating again. The reasons why this happened are themselves still unknown.

So if I understand the process for my gen 2 touch I have to buy a SD card reader, download the software update onto the computer from the Lowrance web page, place a new SD card into ther card reader, download the software onto the SD card from the computer, then put the card into the Gen 2 and somehow activate a download internally from the Gen 2 reading the SD card that I put in. I then put the original SD card back into the Gen 2. Jeezuz im only a dum ass security guard not a computer engineer. Any help on the actual process would be helpfull.

Hope not - I must power mine up tonight and check!

The good thing about the 9ti is you can update directly from the web if necessary, no need to mess with cards.

HDS Gen 2 Touch with GPS

HDS Gen 2 Touch with GPS Patch

Release Date: 12 April 2019

Version: 6.0

On April 6, 2019, a GPS Rollover event occurred.
GPS Rollover events occur every 20 years due to the date and time scale used by the Global Positioning System (GPS), which is based on counting weeks and seconds within a week. When the counter reaches 1024 weeks, it rolls back to week zero. If GPS products are designed without taking this into account, problems can occur with GPS products including incorrect date and time values and/or the loss of position information. Lowrance can confirm that all current generation devices are 100% compatible with the recent GPS week rollover event. There, however, are several legacy products that will require a software update.

Upgrade Instructions

1. Download the file
2. Copy to a blank micro SD card
3. With the unit turned off insert Micro SD in to the card reader
4. Turn on the Lowrance display. (If the update does not automatically start, follow the steps below)
a. HDS Gen1/Gen2
i. Press Pages
ii. Use the directional pad to select Utilities
iii. Next select Files
iv. Select the SD Card and press enter
v. Select software update and press enter
5. After the update has completed, remove the SD card. The unit will shut down
6. Press power key to restart the unit

I Tried

Sat, 2019-04-13 08:41

Just a word of warning. I now have a HDS8 Gen 2 that will not boot up.

It just flashes the lowrance boot screen, stays there for a 10-20 seconds, then reboots continually.

I have tried both a hard and soft reset. They havent worked. It appears to load the update fine, then when removign the card to start the HDS in normal operation, things go to shit.

I had trouble during my last firmware upgrade, but the hard reset(and loss of waypoints) fixed it.

This time i havent yet managed to get it to bootup.

Backup waypoints before attempting.

Working

Sat, 2019-04-13 09:11

After multiple attempts (more than 20), 2 different SD cards, trying various firmware revisions and trying both SD slots, hard and soft resets, it eventually worked.

I didnt do anythign that i hadnt done already.

Good news is, my GPS now turns on, and it appears to be working OK with the new firmware.
