Mangove Jacks at Kalbarri

Gday,

Going for a drive to Kalbarri tommorrow with some mates, and takeing a couple of  cannoes and tinnies.  Ive heard there are a few Jacks and crabs getting around in the river? Anyone heard anything?

Im taking some prawns, squid, mullies and lures and a couple of crab pots.......Ive never fished for Mangrove Jacks before so If anyone has any tips or rig suggestions it would be appreciated.

Cheers

Good luck

Mate I was there a week ago and the place was desolate. Tried beach, rock and estuary fishing as well as crabbing. Not so much as a bite from the beach and rocks, plenty of fish and crabs from the murchison, but ALL were undersized. It was my first time to Kalbarri and I went with big expectations, but left quite shocked and dissapointed.
Went to the local tackle shop and even they said they were struggling to get any fish. Their belief was the heatwave had pushed the fish out deeper, but even the boaties were super quiet.
I am far from saying Kalbarri is a waste of time, because it's a beautiful place, but I won't be going back until at least April.

Might be lucky to get a jack

Might be lucky to get a jack in kalbarri, but Ive heard small minnow lures do the damage. In the river at the moment you should get at least plenty of sandies and bream.

Hi Hairyone. I was up there

Hi Hairyone.

I was up there about 4 days ago and they were everywhere, we were catching them up to 40cm right at the water line, they were hitting everything!!!! just take the road right through town and continue along the dirt track for about a kilometer until you come to a small clearing, there are a couple of old truck tyres there so you wont miss it. Thats where we got all of ours, about 50 meters each side. We also had about hafl a dozen nets going at the same time and ended up with 15 HUGE muddies all from the same spot. We stayed there for three days and ate like kings!!

Make sure you take a heap of blokes coz you really want to get as many as you can, Just dont tell any one ok, i would hate for it too make it onto a public forum and then the secret would be out and the whole thuing would be F&%#$D

Hope this helps mate.

It was a beatiful day at

It was a beatiful day at Kalbarri! It was supposed to be about 26km winds but I reckon it would have been around 10kmh tops. We caught a few blue swimmers and a few muddies but all the muddies were undersize. We got a couple nice size beam but all the other fish were undersize (Grunter, Mangrove Jack, Emperor, heaps of little Bream).

But like they say......a bad days fishing is better than a good day at work!!!

Cheers

you got to do yr time up there guys and the more experience u get up there the better! u can always get fish everyday of the week up there u just gota know where to go and what time of the day or night to go to the spots! the river is a hard place to master for fish up there! some of the best spots i found are the ones that you would least expect to hold fish but they do! the beach an rocks always produce fish pinks etc! knowledge is the key in barri
