I bought a deep ladel with a long handle from a chinese food place, bent in a spout and then sat it over a burner with the cut up lead in it, worked nicely.

In a past life as a bait boy, made up a HD ladle and just used the oxy with large tip. Plenty of crappy fumes though, not keen on doing it again.

Make ingot's

Mon, 2011-06-20 17:22

I use a home made pot and the oxy to make ingot's first. I actualy use a divers weight mold for the ingot's

Recently i bought a Lee lead furnace and this makes it alot easier and safer for making my sinkers.

Check out my thead on grapnel sinkers . there is some pic's of my set up.

Cheers Grant.

Mate, please take extra care

Mon, 2011-06-20 17:27

Mate, please take extra care with melting lead, it's not just the danger of getting burn't, but the bad part is the lead FUMES, make sure you melt it outside, stay up wind of the pot, and even better, wear some sort of breathing apparatis.

Once lead enters your body, there is no way of getting rid of it. Wait for the head-ache, you'll see what I mean.'Take care.

Lead

Mon, 2011-06-20 17:30

Paul,

I use a large camping gas stove with two burners going, each with a large jam tin filled with lead wheel weights and other lead scrap.  By the time one lot has melted, been poured, and the sinkers taken out of the moulds, the other is ready to go.  I bend the jam tins to make a pourer and fold over the side opposite to the pourer so I can handle it with pliers.  You obviously have a lot of lead to melt, but I find my setup manageable and safe.  Obviously, the bigger the melt, the more weight becomes an issue and the more risk of a spill.

Just a reminder, water and molten lead don't mix (well they do, but the resulting splatter is pretty spectacular), so make sure any lead you are adding to the melt is dry, and your moulds are dry. And do it in a well ventilated area to avoid inhaling the vapour.

Have fun.  Great score on getting that much lead!

Peter

Ta for the offer, need bigger though. Its just for deep drop stuff.

Seems really hard to buy any moulds for these big sizes too, might have to look into some DIY there.

Heat your moulds before

Mon, 2011-06-20 17:57

Heat your moulds before pouring lead into them, makes it so much easier. You will need a good source of heat to do 50kgs at a time. Better of getting a bit started first then adding to it as you go.

Breathing apparatus for sure, did a heap with Jeff last week and think I'm still getting head aches as a result.  Concur with Brendan, heat the moulds up whilst melting the lead.

Paul use 2 pots i to keep the lead hot in a big pot first then a smaller one to pour i use a shot pot ( small cast pot ) heat up the moulds once they start to pour well you dont need to heat the moulds up any more as they will stay hot enough if you get a system going and yes do it outside in the fresh air. also cut the lead up into smallish peices to melt i found it works much better and dosnt cool the pot too much if you put big lots of lead in at a time the big pot will cool and you will have to reheat the moulds. if you want more info pm me and ill come and show you how i do it

have a look at this paul, a bit small but just do a few at a time, unles you have a lot of moulds.

while your melting more lead the moulds are cooling down enough to get your sinkers out.

110V

Ron that second one is 110V which is american voltage. you would require a step down transformer to use it here.  I am not sure it would pack enough punch to melt the lead quickly or whether it would hold enough to make a decent snapper lead, but stillsafer than using the pot and burner

American

Tue, 2011-06-21 12:22

Agree with Rig, a lot of the furnace's on ebay are american. I got the one in the link below from Western Firearms.

I find it great to use. It takes about 20 min to melt the lead at first, ( approx 8kg ) Once it is hot i pour my batch of moulds , which uses about 1/3 of the lead. Then drop in another ingot, wich melts straight away. If you keep a good amount of lead in the furnace it dose not loose much  heat at all.

Once i get going, i have not had to wait for more lead to melt, Best money for value IMO.. Plus i find it 100% safer than the way i poured lead before.

Cheers Grant

Ali pot

Tue, 2011-06-21 18:54

All I use is a big ali pot that I picked up from a second hand shop and a ring burner. It holds about 10kg and I just keep topping it up regularly. A steel bake bean tin held with a pair of multi grip lock ons is the ladle and use sliding clamps to hold the mould sides together. A set of good quality welders gloves to handle the hot moulds is essential.

When topping up the pot I just put the moulds in as well and they float on top of the lead as it melts
