Metal Craypots

Just out of curiosity is anyone using metal / steel cray pots? There are some on Gumtree for $130. Not looking at buying them just wondering if anyone is using them and what the catch rate is like? Cheers

 Steel frame or complete steel?

Plenty of pros use steel frames year round successfully but i have never seen a full steel cray pot?

Metal pots

Metal works on the resident crays.. Used to pot straight off shore years ago up at Green and they would catch well.

Added bonus seemed to be less Wobbies in the pots. Not sure whether this was luck or not.

Definitely not kind on glass boats however nor is a steel bottomed pot.

Added bonus was also less weight required due to the reduced surface area to be effected by surge and currents.

Good point

That's the way I see it too, bait box would be better placed in the centre of the top next to the neck.

yep agree

imo if your looking at it from a north to south , the red neck should be moved to the north centreline midway up that pot and left about a third inwards west with the bait basket directly west of that again ,

make the crays walk up onto the top of it and once inside they cant easily walk back up where the red neck is to escape out again

I agree

The "funnel" is on the side and surely crays would just walk up the side and out. If it was in the middle they couldnt do that as easy -right?

Photos Added

Ive added a few photos at the top.... If you design them like a conventional cray pot then wouldnt have an issue with crays getting the bait from the outside....

I rekon I could knock a few of them up in a couple of hours for bugger all so was keen to know if they performed

Cheers

I might make one up for a trial and see how it goes. If it works would probably make stainless one's that would last for years.
