Metro Blue-Eye Trevalla & Bass Grouper on jig!!!!
With the weather being very average and the forecast showing a continued trend I looked at yesterdays weather and thought half a chance!
Decided to take deepwater jigs only which i do periodically and no bait. The stormfronts really whipped up the offshore current which I thought might happen but what the heck. It was screeming at a fast rate and very hard to get my favourite jig down there. I rate the Sanme 650g jig which Kasey got me onto a while ago and well worth the money despite not being cheap. We've been having great success together with this jig but yesterday was a stretch for it to find & hold bottom!
With my sounder showing the right fish i kept on persisting, i know if I dropped a bait with a heavy lead we would of got fish but it was an artificial jig day only. After persisting I got a hook-up, it felt like a descent Blue eye and I wasn't disappointed.

deep jigy!
Deeper Hlokk, I did try in closer also where the current was a bit better but no fish on my sounder.......they move around heaps!
Matt T, the Blue-Eye are an awesome eating fish, high quality fish for sure. Yeh thats heavy kevlar on that assist, the Blue-Eye have very raspy teeth!
Yeh Damo, we had a lul in the wind (photo time period) but she was really choppy & lumpy in general. The winds out further are definatly higher than say the normal offshore i've found!
Cheers fellas!

The last 3 months!
Kasey & myself have been trying different stuff out there Sam on the deepwater species. I've experiemented with short versus long assist, two assist versus one and have caught plenty of fish with all. The doubles however, especially long versions to suit this jig have tangled due to its eratic action. That said is the reason why i've gone back to singles!
I've had a few PM's tonight re jigging deepwater species so to those ppl, keep an eye out. Kasey has an awesome WAFM "Feature article" coming out in a weeks time (July/August) issue, runs through all what we've been doing out there in the last 3 months!

That sounds like a Trevalla
That sounds like a Trevalla bite Bodie. The length of the assist cord is not so important because predatory fish always attack the head first - but Trevalla tend to peck and slash rather than gulp and swallow.
Either that or small sh1t fish, depending on what you see on the sounder.

in-depth look!
Blue Eye Trevalla hit and miss jigs but "return" to take the jig however. The hits your getting would be smaller fish....probably pinks & or yellow eye red snapper etc
The length assist i'm using on that Sanme is too long. I agree with KC, its not that important but type of jig and action "very" important. I'm using & recommending shorter assist than what I've been using!
All the bite marks on my jigs are from the head down to mid body (1/2 way) of my jigs. The pic doesnt show it properly but my assist hook is 3/4 down the length of the jig.....too long!
I've had a few PM's re the jigs we're using. I'm using the 500gram Zest and the Sanme 650g jigs. We stock both and the Sanme is great for extra current and deep deep jigging!

I've heard the 1/3-1/2
I've heard the 1/3-1/2 'guideline' before, and thats how I rig up my jigs (two hooks different lengths). Though sometimes I've used assists on jigs meant for jigs half the size and they still get hit. I have a few mackie bites just missing the hooks though (must be tail nippers :p). I've found for my jigs and jigging style, often the hooks will be 'trailing' behing the head, so super long assist cords means your hooks are far away from the jig. Fish still hit it, but i feel more comfortable having it shorter. Big fish just engulf everything though(sucking the hook in first most of the time :D).
Though as Ryan mentioned, sometimes you just chuck on whatevers available :p.

discect!
I didnt say "chuck on whatever is available" Matt!
I discect things in "detail" and use the correct gear to suit. That said i've experiment on the water alot and have tried different assist lengths & tried one versus two assist as mentioned. I've found that two assist of different lengths will jag one hook also and prolong the fight/make it harder . So I rather use only "one" assist on deepwater fish/jigs now!
These jigs I'm using are long so longer assist are required and they inhale the jig so long assists not an issue. However, just a bit shorter than what i've been using is better and thats only to do with hook grab on jig curve with this particular jig!

Oh, right, must of
Oh, right, must of misunderstood what you meant when you said normally you'd go shorter. Might look into the action of those jigs to see if I can improve my hook setup on various jigs and match them a bit better.

Honesty
After being out fishing with Ryan more than a couple of times, one thing I can guarantee is that Ryan normally under-estimates the weight of the fish he catches (and mine). He won't post a weight on any website unless he has put in on the scales. My point is: no matter what it looks like 27kgs = 27kgs.
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

accurate!
Uncle Ben, i too over the years have looked at fish on this site and judged. What i have learnt is to weigh my fish and remove all doubt for my own catch. I guessed all of Soupys fish (water guess) he caught on my boat recently and i'm known as an "underestimater" of fish. I was supprised also that i guessed "well under" when all fish were weighed on land with my accurate scales!
All my fish are "weighed" if killed and they're standouts, I've spent some $$$ on a digital scale that is near on certified accuracy so very very accurate. I recently got them tested at a certified weight station for claiming a record (not going into that, you'll see later) So my digital scale weights on all my standouts/big fish that I post up on FW are spot on!
That Blue-Eye was held by my two hands and in a normal photo hold. The bass was "LAYING" against my chest and not a good picture. I guessed that fish would go 22-25kg, my decky said more Ryan.........when i got home it weighed exactly 26.89kg
Thanks fella's!!

Ryan..... i am not saying your scales are wrong but a 12kg difference between those 2 fish is a big difference when they look so similiar.... even between holding the fish against you or not..... sorry but just my opinion

easy to!
Thats okay Uncle, I agree its easy to be an arm chair judge....we've all been there at some stage BUT PHOTO'S NEVER DO JUSTICE (often going either way)
I do everything by the book ie Catch limits, Legal size limits and Fish weights....that way there's no legal issue or confusion

can be!
Thanks Dean, yeh if the currents running fast, missing the fish or they're not hungry then that makes jigging hard work. For me as the skipper thats more frustration added but that pressure makes me think harder also! We've had days where KC & myself rock up to one of my spots, drop jigs and baggout after a few drifts.Wish it was always that way but not!
Your old mans new setup is perfect mate, had a look at Pauls workshop a little while ago......sweet!

The wave height is forecast
The wave height is forecast to drop from 5/2m on Monday to 1.4m on Friday which is certainly a step in the right direction!
I hope to take my tinny out a few miles Wednesday, my last chance before my brother takes it up north for a few weeks and I'm stuck land-based again.
I might find some shallow water pinkies, won't hold my breath on shallow-water ruby, bass grouper or trevallathough =)

Tackle Trade Show!
ha ha ..... yes got plenty of stock for a small shop mate but more coming. I've just attended the first of the Tackle Trade shows here in WA recently to see the New stuff coming. That being for the New season 2009/2010......some great gear being released!
My order from that trade show starts arriving next week and more Trade shows between now and September.....geez the season comes around very quickly!
Honsu is getting in New "heavy Jig" rods in Spin & Ovehead models for deepwater jigging and they should be arriving next week also. Plenty more to come from that niche area!
Last but not least, we've got out deepwater jig order (second order) arriving by air-freight next week. So, if ppl are chasing the deepwater jigs feel free to pop in then or PM!
I'll post up when the New products start filtering through!

Great fish Ryan and well done for giving all the info and feedback on your exploits including the weights of the fish. Who cares what people think. They can have an opinion but at the end of the day you know what you caught and what it weighed because you were there doing the hard yards. Reward for effort. Well done.

antagonistic action!
These Sanme jigs have a curved body so fast rip up/lift & wind will depart an antagonistic action. Speed jigging also helps when things are a bit slow!

I haven't heard any mention of light sticks being used in conjunction with deep water jigging or is it unnecessary. The bait soakers seem to think light sticks make a difference.

Hi Alan, It's hard to see
Hi Alan,
It's hard to see how one could secure attach a lightstick to a jig without either having it fall off very quickly or ending up in a massive tangle.
Some jigs have lumo paint on them but I haven't found myself needing to specifically hunt for these.

Ryan proves
Lay off. I could post and nobody would care about my (false) brag about the 13kg red etc.
Just because Ryan has proved what he can do and what we dream of doing, does not give us as a fishing community the right to EARN respect to criticise.
Opening up new frontiers for us to dream about is what I see Ryan as doing.
I commend him on that.
As for light sticks, use them everywhere at night, and I dont have to prove to it.

Deepwater!
Yeh the fillet take versus frame weight on Bass is lower than normal, i do go around the stomach to preserve that area also!
For shallow water they're chasing WA Dhufish, Pink snapper and Baldchin groper in particular I think!
For deepwater ie 200m plus they're wanting Bass Groper, Blue Eye Trevalla, Hapuku, Ruby, Greybanded cod as the main ones in particular.
