Missing fisherman

Don't want to start a pocorn thread, but a discussion on this topic as it's reared it's head again. It's looking more likely this guy probably won't be found (alive)  so my thoughts go out to his family and work colleagues. But surely some sort of syatem must be brought in for this type of scenario.  Especially the crap pros fish in sometimes where as someone goes overboard there is a sensing/alarm type system. I know a static line type situation wouldn't work as probably more a hazard than anything else. Or at the minimum mandatory self inflating jackets. In this day and age some smart cookie can come up with something simple and economical, there's a huge market for it.

Man overboard systems

Tue, 2016-08-16 13:58

There are already a number of electronic systems on the market

www.powerandmotoryacht.com/safety/man-overboard

Getting someone to wear it is another story, just like the life jackets.

Missing man

Tue, 2016-08-16 14:39

The vessel that he is missing from has netting around most of the rear of the boat to stop things or persons falling overboard so no doubt there will be questions asked.

As for wearing safety gear when working the deck can be a right pain in the bum but this seems to be the case of a person missing when the others got up to start work in the morning. Sadly I think there is no chance of him being found due to no one knowing exactly when or where he fell overboard making the search area huge and difficult to cover

A mate of mine went to tip a

Tue, 2016-08-16 19:43

A mate of mine went to tip a box of old bait over a coupleof years ago on about a 55ft cray boat, as he went to tip it over which he had done hundreds of times before the boat hit a slop and he lost his footing and over he went...

His old man realised not too far away but still maybe a mile, Zac panicked and tried to rip his jacket off but he forgot he had the sleeves velcroed tight so now he had a jacket on inside out attached to his hands preventing him from being able to try and get his boots and water proof pants off let alone try and survive.  Luckily for him his old man spotted him and he was plucked from the water before he drowned which would have happened undoubtedly...

Short story long, His old man now has installed one of those proximity sensors on the boat... You wear part B on you and if you get more than what ever the distance is from part A the alarm goes off...

Zac was one of the lucky ones, I know of a couple of others back when i was fishing prior to this technology that werent...

YOU ARE MAD if you think it wont happen to you and cant wear something no bigger than an old moby phone because you are too staunch!!

Regardless of whether it is legislated to make it mandatory, Resposible skippers should provide it to their crew...

I came here to try and find out the details as i missed the story on the news, My thoughts go out to his family.

Tim

As has been highlighted by Zoom

There are a number of excellent devices already on the market to give an alarm when a crew member goes overboard.

My sympathy goes out to the loved ones of the person lost at sea, things do not look good for a positive outcome.

Missing

Wed, 2016-08-17 06:20

While I was down in Freo doing my Master 5 ticket got a phone call at 0530 saying that one of the deckies went missing.

They were anchored about 70nm NW of Hedland and woke up to find Mick was gone. Resulting search found nothing.

Finished orals for ticket on Thursday and was taking boat back to sea on Friday arvo as owner had to fly back south, was not a nice feeling heading out with a mate not there with you.

Diving PLB - Nautilus LifeLine

Wed, 2016-08-17 07:50

Found this product whilst looking for a suitable PLB that would work for diving as well. Has anybody on here heard of or used one of these before? A little bit pricier and not as good range as a normal PLB but being waterproof to 130m and radio comms appear to be two positives for this option.

Steep Point.

Not sure if this is the same, but a crab fisherman went overboard the other day up here.

Mixed stories going around but talking to a pro fisherman here, the young guy was not in a good place in his head at the time.

Still no word as of last night, but hope never ends in the search.

Conditions not the best here today but fingers crossed.

Yeah poor bugger might have had a few issues and thought fuck it and done a swan dive....Its an increasingly common occurance with people driving into semis and large trees when their I have had enough meter red lines. Regardless of the cause its sad.

Condolences to family...you raise a good point sea-kem.

All should have a simple but effective system such as timboon talks about.

We were on a fishing charter

Fri, 2016-08-19 20:53

We were on a fishing charter off dirk hartog at the time he went over, no alert on the radio. Next day fisheries board us to check licences etc, mentioned there was a man over board night before, no further info to say he's ok or not. We dock today to find out he's still missing, that's messed up, wtf??? 70+ foot charter boat should have been diverted to help search.

Top Gun

Sat, 2016-08-20 05:45

Suspect you were on Top Gun 2, they would have gone if notified as they have done in past searches off Carnarvon.
100nm would take approx. 6 hours steaming from Koks area to the search zone and when search planes are available they will be the main resource used due to the size of the area needed to be covered
