Mobile electronics installer

Hi all,

My Garmin GPS/Sounder 12 inch combo has shit itself and I'm looking at getting a 587 sounder and Simrad/ Lowrance 9 inch GPS unit installed depending on prices at the boat show next week. Only drama is that I have a Airmac TM260 1kw tranny with a Garmin plug that's going to need to be spliced into a Furuno plug. I'm looking at getting something to cover the hole in the dash and need to have the holes re cut to hold the new equipment.

Although it's something that I'm sure I could sit down and work out myself and persevere, it's also a big investment in $$$ and want it done well.

Can anyone recommend someone to do this sort of work?

Thanks

Sorry to hear that, what happened to the Garmin?

Have a look at the aluminium composite board they sell in bunnings etc. scere_182 used some on his Genesis rebuild for the same purpose and it looks good.

Ill check that out today. Great looking boat you've got there.

I should know what's wrong with it today, but it is having issues picking up GPS. Changed the T plugs, changed the cables and changed the external antenna but ant find a signal. Once she's out of the metal boat, I'll see if the internal antenna will connect. If so, good for a glass boat. If not, then a crack inside somewhere.

The advantages of buying

The advantages of buying transducers from the US is that they are mix and match, they all have the same airmar plug and you buy the lead to match your system then there's the price advantage too. We get locked into buying transducers here with the manufacturers plugs fitted. I am sure you can do what your saying but by the time you get someone to do what your asking you may be better off selling your existing transducer on eBay as the go for good money still used and import a mix and match one from the US. No risk of damage to the new head unit and you can upgrade as you please between manufacturers just buy a new lead to match.

Its actually only three wires and doesn't look difficult at all is using resin heat shrink on each wire then again over the entire load. I did get a quote of $135 to do it through a boat shop, just thought that I'd rather find a local bloke

I haven't gone for a looksee yet, but I was hoping to find a local bloke, then get a "connection" added to it so I could swap between the two units. For shallow, the Lowrance/Simrad would be mint but once above that 40 meter mark, back to the Furuno. Best of both worlds then
