Montebellos

Hi All,

Trying to plan a trip to Barrow/Montebellos around June/July. Just wondering who done it and what the best spot to depart from is?

Ive read about people leaving from Fortescue river mouth but I cant see any tracks in there or anything and wondering if its easy enough to launch a big boat there?

Any info including somewhere to have a look for some GTs would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers guys

Biggest issue with bigger

Biggest issue with bigger boats is the long drawbar. The ramp is quite steep so the trailer can bottom out at the top.
With an 8m boat you might be better off launching at Onslow and heading up. Particularly if you want to fish barrow.
I've left my rig at fortescue for a few days at time and never had an issue. Never heard of problems there.

I had a look at the fortescue ramp a few weeks ago , id only be happy launching and retreiving on a high tide as the ramp -as stated- is quite steep and is made up of loose pebble/rock . On the high tides your car would be a flat area with trailer on the slope so retrieval would be much easier without the need of multiple 4x4 to pull you up the loose rock . Id be keen to do a convoy to the islands if your ever in the area.

 If your chasing Gt's mate

Sun, 2017-01-29 10:57

If your chasing Gt's mate would recommend launching from Onslow the service station offers a great service that stores your rig and drops you off/picks you up from the ramp. Would definitely leave early and hit the Rosily Cays on the way. Epic place to cast for Gt's and all the other species we lug the boat up north for. Terrific if there's a few lads on the boat as you can anchor the boat up in about 5m and cast in any direction to hook up fish. If your into trolling for pelagics hit Penguin bank, awesome place to scrape paint off your Halco collection. If you back down hard on your fish and sunset your drag you should get in some good fish before the Sharks figure out the game plan. Prior to hitting the montes I would highly recommend having a good discussion amongst the lads on where you want to camp and picking a select few to draw upon as otherwise you may spend bloody ages trying to settle on 'the best' spot. This is because the place is phenomenal and as you get cheekier with your boat there (this happens involuntarily as you have no choice as some gaps you have to shoot are in big tide movements between solid rock walls just wide enough to get through) every 'new' bay you find turns into the 'perfect' camping spot. Hope this helps.

Fortescue

You will have no problems launching and retrieving at Fortescue we have done it with couple 8m boats, just keep an eye on the tides. also the road in is good also and leaving your car there no problems.

Monteys

Me and a Mate have been keen to do this trip for a while, We have done a few big trips, Bay hopped from Kalbarri to Coral Bay, Bernier and Dorrie Islands from shark bay, Thevenard / Serrurier Is. and a few others up that way. But the Monties have been just that bit too far with 1 boat and as you probably know, heaps of guys are keen to join in until it gets to the pointy end and the excuses roll out

I heard you could launch from Fortescue but it didnt show much on Google earth so I as was passing (as you do) in September I thought I would do a recky. I am assuming Septembers not a good time as I could only get about 10k down the track. I'm hoping  the water levels at the "creek" (20m wide) subside dramatically as there was no way I was crossing this creek on my own. and definately not with the boat

Keep us posted on your plans we wouldnt mind tagging along

20m? More like 200m. Its totally firm underneath but the exit is a few hundred metres 'downstream' of the entrance.

You'll need mid to low tide

You'll need mid to low tide to cross the creek there, its wimds through like dodgy said, not a strait crossing.
