moreton bay bugs

Hi all

Does anyone know how long you cook (boil) bugs for.

My mate just dropped 1/2 a dozen off (God bless him).

Cheers

Found doing them in the frypan with garlic butter beats boiling them hands down,

Just peel the tails and drop them in a hot pan with some garlic butter.

where abouts do you catch them

Mon, 2011-02-14 16:39

Hi guys,

Have had them plenty of times on restaurant's and Thailand ect and they tast amazing. My question is how and where do you catch these things?

Obviously not aking for any gps spots or grandad's secret spot but just a general idea.

Can they be caught in WA and if so what are the major places? Might sounds stupid but anywhwere metro you could catch some?

And what method is used to catch them? drop nets or traps of some kind I imagine.

Done truckloads of regular fishing, crabbing, prawning, squidding ect just never really though about how or where you would catch bugs

Bugs

Mon, 2011-02-14 16:46

Hi Scano,

Bugs are caught in WA - usually they are a by-catch on the prawn trawlers up north.

They are caught all around the northern half of Australia - I haven't heard of them being caught in southern waters, but that doesn't mean they aren't.

And, I don't know of any other methods of getting them...

Many years ago, I was a deckie in the gulf of Carpentaria, and we used to get them in the nets, but there was never a large number of them.

Mmmmm..... my favourites!

Cheers,

Judy

Scano,They are nocturnal and

Scano,

They are nocturnal and not the easiest things to catch, unless you can pick them up.

I spoke with fisheries about Bugs a while ago and since they aren't in the fisheries guide, you're allowed to take up to 40.

As the other poster mentioned, they can be found in Nickol Bay (Karratha) and up to Point Samson.

Agree with the garlic

Agree with the garlic butter!  Add abit of cooking oil so the butter does not burn.
