Mystery Bite Off - Hillarys Rock Wall

Yesterday afternoon berleying up around 2pm at hillaryss rock wall for about an hour when my rod with a mulie on a snell had a run. (Was in a rod holder with soft drag)

By the time I had go to the rod it whatever it was had gone, upon reeling my rid in i notice the bottom hook on my snell appeared to have been bitten off. There were like 2 abrasion point above where the bottom hook was on the mono...

Curious to what it was as it was 60LB quality fluorocarbon leader, could it have just been a tailor?? or is it possible for pinky to do that I also highly doubt small shark during the day....

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Sounds like a NW Blowie to me.  Shark is the next best guess.

Tailor is unlikely to bite through 60lb leader, although it is possible.  Low probablity a pinkie would do that.

Sharks

I landed a couple of Black tip reef sharks there a couple of weeks ago. Was using snell rig but lip hooked so i would say that is what it was.

Same here, had two lines out

Mon, 2016-05-02 18:36

Same here, had two lines out once, holding one the whole time and the other in a rod holder.

I felt absolutely nothing and decided to check the bait. Both baits were gone as were the two hooks. Pulled up the one in the rod holder and the same thing.

Both were 60lb line and all 4 hooks gone with no indication of anything.

Dropped a jig down and straight away was on.... just got a NW blowie to the boat and then is dropped off because it ended up cutting through the kevlar cord !!

Those chompers can cut through just about anything with ease.

I forgot

Mon, 2016-05-02 12:42

I completely forgot about the northwester, I am thinking it must have been once of them most likely.

It was a very average run not like a small shark!

Cheers fellas

 Unlikely a small shark would

Mon, 2016-05-02 13:46

Unlikely a small shark would bite through 60lb before you could get to the rod, their teeth usually take a while to gnaw through.

That said, they are probably the most likely candidate behind bolt cutters.

Had 60 lb bitten through by a pinkie

Mon, 2016-05-02 16:33

Son was fishing with snooded hooks and mulie, quick pressure then gone. Reeled in a 60lb leader neatly snipped. About a half hour later ( we were anchored and burleying) I caught a nice pinky on an SP. Guess what? One snood rig well swallowed. Have you ever loked at the rear of a pinkies throat? The are two pads there with sharp protrusions to further crush food before it passes  to the stomach, and these are sharp. he appearted to have swallowed the rig backwards, and the line above the top hook was neatly sheared by one of these " throat teeth", for want of a better description, the hooks were still in his gill area. probably nver happen again, but they can certainly snip 40lb leader with their crushing teeth, and circle hooks are no sure defence against this when they are ravenous.

Wire Snell

Tue, 2016-05-03 08:32

I should maybe switch to wire snell, I am going to start looking at live baiting around there too so probably a good idea.

I used to fish those rocks

Tue, 2016-05-03 09:23

I used to fish those rocks often, plenty of small sharks around there if you know where to look and how to target them.

live snook and herring are definitely the best baits if you can get your hands on them. I don't run wire when casting for the smaller sharks, 100lb mono leader with two snelled 6/0 or 8/0 circles. Do get the odd bite-off but personally I think it gets you the extra takes and I know I personally land more than I lose with that setup.

If you do want to use wire I run 40lb nylon coated 7 strand on the odd occasion.

My biggest tip would be go light. 30lb at the max with 20lb being my preference, especially a when running mono leader and no wire. Braid is fun and works ok for the small sharks but I prefer mono, I run 20lb mono as you can pull a lot harder than with 20lb braid and the stretch accounts for more fish IMO.

If you do use braid run a long leader, at least 5m for a bit of added stretch and abrasion resistance. Also gives you something to grab on when they're close to the rocks.

Bronzies?

Tue, 2016-05-03 09:40

I assume a fair few small bronzies around?? How far along the south rock wall do you typically go?

 Not really many bronzies,

Tue, 2016-05-03 10:09

Not really many bronzies, more small tigers and spinners.

I usually fish just before the path ends on the south wall, in the lee of the reef just out from the wall.

The rougher the better I've found
