MyWebSearch - Smiley Central

I've noticed for a while that this forum was getting slower. After doing some (google) digging, and copping a tracking dialoue when I used IE to access my bank, I found out that a number of websites package MyWebSearch. This includes Smileycentral.com.

Basically, every cookie is tracked and this slows down many website content downloades.

After spending 2 hours removing the DLL files (having to register/unregister a list of DLL files and (sub)directories and update my registry, this site runs much faster for me.

Not fishing I know, but just thought I would mention it.

Smiley Central

Sat, 2009-02-28 21:11

It's about spyware Colin and Roberta, the crap that slows your system down and captures heaps of stuff you really don't want captured.

This site (Smiley Central) is notorious Colin (s) for it's tracking and is well known to most popular spyware programs. Adaware  http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php is a good free agent to use to detect and get rid of the shit that these sites "park" on you.

My Wife subscribes to heaps of sites that give her access to all the things us men don't need, like freebe offers and nice animated icons bla bla. I spend a lot of time cleaning up. Really! She has the best machine and she always complains it's a pile of crock and that she needs a new one..I always get a bit of a peck on the cheek after I clean up the mess. It's called keeping the local techo happy or pay for it!! LOL

Yup Spyware ??

Mon, 2009-03-02 07:28

Yup, know that Vince, that's why I posted the thread. Yeah Adaware I've found is a good product. I've used it in the past but was concerned it might conflict with PC Tools Spyware Doctor which tracked and quarantined (but did not get rid of MywebSearch).

Vince/anyone - can you run both of these without conflict (as I see Adaware free doesn't include a virus element whereas Spyware Doctor does)?

Hey there Colin

Mon, 2009-03-02 08:58

It's never a good idea to have several real-time scanners running at the same time. They often "fight" each other and your system will run like a dog. Ad=Aware free edition is not real-time. It's a scanner used at your leasure and command to do scans for "resident" crap. I usually do a scan once a week.

The arguement over which is best just goes on and on. At the end of the day it's all about how you set up the real-time scanning options and how many times you "allow" programs to function when prompted by the scanner. Bear in mind that there is a marked difference between virus', Trojans and Spyware (adware). I use commercial software for virus and trojan protection and hope that these packages will also filter some of the adware that exists. I use products like Ad-Aware to cleanse my systems as part of weekly maintenance.

Let's not get into an arguement about which program is best on here. I use what I have found works for me over years of frustration.

Agreed Vince ???

Debating software is like a 2stroke vs 4 stroke arguement Laughing

So, are you saying that Adaware should conflict ?

Ad-Aware

Mon, 2009-03-02 09:34

No. Because Ad-Aware Free is not real-time it should be fine to use as an extra tool to fight off the spyware etc. It's fine to use Spyware Doctor in realtime as long as you don't have other real-time spyware software running. In my opinion however, if the Doctor is not doing what it's supposed to do well, get rid of it and just use Ad-Aware periodically, or, better still, purchase the full version of Ad-Aware. It's a great package IMO.

Thanks mate. That's what I thought, but just wanted to make sure. For the most part, I've found Spyware Doctor, coupled with Zone Alarm (as a software firewall) to do the job.

Out of interest I jst found this site:

I've tried to upload in the tree next to smiley & toggle screen but it keeps saying to large and I've resized but what size do you go to.  Simple things I guess Vince.

I've also got spydoctor do complete scan once a week also.  Also they update I think from memory once a week also.

Uploading

Mon, 2009-03-02 10:42

I can only assume you are trying to upload images to this site???? PM me if it's something else and I will help you through.

The trick here is to resize pics to and aspect of 500 pixels wide for use on this site. Make sure you save your original size pics for use elsewhere and save the new image as a different name (e.g. pic1_small.jpg).

Yes Roberta, most computer people are called NERDS because thay are!!! Try standing at a bar listening to them talk. It's a bit like listening to stockbrokers talk. You soon move away. I like to keep things simple and use tried and tested tools. I follow the technical comentary for product information but try not to engage in the chest banging that goes on.

One thing is for sure Roberta. There is no such thing as a free lunch so, generally, if something is free it either has catches or it doesn't provide a complete solution. Always read terms and conditions and compare features with their paid offerings.

Cheers, Vince
