nav markers

just to let everyone know might be coming up in the future there are 3 new navigation markers set in the rivermouth in kalbarri as of today. A new portside marker just west of the original one that now marks the edge of the slab that would slways catch people out coming back in near oyster reef. There is also a new starboard side marker north of the mouth but the placement of this marker looks bit too close to oyster reef especially on a big swell day so be carefull when coming around this one especially coming in to the mouth. There is also a north cardinal marker further out to the nw of the mouth which might confuse people so be careful. Use your head and commonsense with these new markers.

Who put them in place

If the dept of transport put them in lets hope that they put out a notice to mariners so all can mark them on chart plotters etc.

DOT did it, I was talking to them at the petrol station in Gero by coincidence yesterday as they were towing their boat up there.

outside stbd

Wed, 2015-02-04 08:30

the outside stbd marker is set in a fairly close position to oyster reef. If your motor fails your gona end up on the reef so not going to knw until we get a big swell but probably should have been set a bit further out. If you feel its too close for comfort when coming in just take the safer line on the opposite side of it

Butits about time and only cost 1.4mill for the 3!!!I

F**ing ridiculous

What a waste of time and money. They are more obstruction than aid--the only possible use i can see for them is as a FAD for sambos--the one right in the middle of the hole is in a good spot for that. I only got home yesterday, came over the hill at Chinamans and said WTF? To say they are controversial locally would be an understatement. What office-bound twat dreams this shit up? Why don't they just put a line of them starting at Baldface so the numpties can find their way back to the rivermouth?  Glad I'm not still running a crayboat out of there, so I don't have to dodge them in the dark.

I would certainly be going the "wrong" side of that first one leaving the channel, they have stuck it right in the middle of your best path. Anyone who has "issues" with the mouth of the Murchison, go into the WA Boat Ramps thread  fishwrecked.com/forum/western-australian-boat-launching-sites-information in the in the Boating sub-forum, all the info, including marked-up pictures of the best path, and what to avoid, are there.

Sorry if this seems like a rant, but this nanny state crap really annoys me. Someone sunk a dinghy in the rivermouth just yesterday, new markers and all--with the swell that was running, he shouldn't have been out. All the nannying in the world can't fix stupid. Oh well, after the first really big swell of winter they'll probably be gone, at least two of them will be under six metre high breakers. Good riddance.
