new dhuie limits

I think new dhuie limits should be introduced after seeing the post on biggest dhuie you caught. if you are under 50yo all dhuies to bigger that 5 kgs should be returned to the ocean if your 50 plus you can take up to 10kg dhuies if your over 60 you can catch them as big as you can get another words 10 kg plus and before you young blokes get cranky us older blokes don't have as much time as you young blokes to catch them before we die hahah

Rubbish fish

Sun, 2013-08-18 20:31

They IMO are rubbish and not worthy of the praise or the price in shops they get.

There are heaps of better eating quality fish that blow them away like nannygai, boarfish, robinson sea bream, baldy, coral trout ,etc and a lot of the cod species.

Given the choice I would take a pink snapper of the same size in place of a dhuey

THANKYOU!!!! haha i dont like dhuies at all, most overrated fish in the ocean in my opinion. boarfish or fresh pink snapper anyday, little sambos and spanish mack are very high up there as well. oh and breaksea cod ill swap a 40cm one of them for a small dhuie anyday.

My old man's view on dhui is that its hard to f*** it up when cooking, kinda like chicken. It's overated but still a good eating fish.

Over-rated in terms of retail/restaruant price ;). I've had Dhuie, Coral trout and Baldie in one meal (at Abrolhos) and would put Dhuie below the other two, but above most other fish.

I don't think people turn

Mon, 2013-08-19 14:59

I don't think people turn noses up to dhues...what I think people fail to realise, in terms of commercial selling, Dhues are a very very "non fishy" tasting fish....lets say compared to mackies that have that strong aroma and flavour of fish.

Also the whole iconic issue of the wa dhues only being able to be caught in the south west up to kalbarri and the publicity the fish species gets....

I can almost guarantee if you went up to a random (with no fishing sense, who enjoys eating fish) and said describe me what a coral trout and dhue looks like....99% wouldn't be able to tell you what a coral trout is.

I must be that 1%

I can easily tell the difference between a fillet of Ctrout and Dhu. The reason dhuey is so easy to cook is the size of the muscle segments. If they are as big as a dhu its harder to overcook, whereas most oher fish have smaller segmentation.

Dhu fillets are almost white, Coral trout has a pinky sheen. The blood line on the skin side off the fillet is much more pronounced in Coral trout (due to the explosive speed they need) than the more docile Dhue.

But then I have to admit that I do look at filleted fish closely as I hate to overcook fish. What a waste, and I have converted almost all the inlaws to almost raw fish after cooking.

I think it should be the other way around. You people 50+ should release the big ones for us young guys to catch. Youve had your time to nailthe big ones. Its out turn hahaha

On the Dhu tasting. I agree theres lots i rate above it. But cooked properly its brilliant!!!

Dhuys

Mon, 2013-08-19 17:37

are bloody over rated as fighting fish offshore(different on shore ), over rated eating, but keep well in the freezer.
As for taste, I rate Rankins, Robinson Sea bream, baldys and some of our finer small fish way in front of those big, over priced vacuum feeders

if u ever tasted barramundi cod -now there s a fish coral trout , nannagai, whiting etc beats em everytime

i would rather catch a shark mac than a dhu

why couldnt sand whiting be the size of dhu s?
