Hi just moved to Port Hedland ---have a new rod and reel - and can do a basic rig.----4x4 so can get to most places ----Would like to know what bait and the best tides to fish in Port Hedland. I went out to Finny Island on monday arrived at 12.30 and fished the in tide to 3.30pm ------used prawns and squid and a prawn lura with no luck-----Am looking forward to getting out and having fun fishing but finding it hard as have not fished for over 30 years. Any advice would be great. Nellie

simple things are to use
simple things are to use local bait like mullet which can either be brought at the shops or catch it in a cast net otherwise squid and mullies are OK. fish your rig near the structures like reef, rocks, mangroves. fish the change of the tide either the high or low depending on what you're targeting.
for bait fishing you can keep it as simple as a 30cm 80lb mono trace with a suitable swivel or join with appropriate know like and albright, running sinker on the race to the hook, keep the line tight for the bites and hang on. Spots i have no idea but the spoil bank fishes well for threadies on the low and queenies and trevally on the high i have been told

Finnie definatley fishes
Finnie definatley fishes best on the low. Once the water cools off in winter there are a lot of good blue nose salmon to be had at the bottom of the tide on dusk.
6 & 12 mile creeks also fish very well.
If you look on google earth you can see tracks leading to creeks everywhere

G,day Nellie,Just moved
G,day Nellie,
Just moved here myself from karratha , but have not yet been fishing(waiting for the sailfish season to fire up) but around most of the creeks I have heard you can do really well.Even try the Fini side of the channel enterance, you just keep going past the boat ramp turn off and you will see a goat track that leads onto the beach, then follow it around and and it will take you onto the channel across from the park/boat ramp in town, but becareful of the tide there as it will go under on higher tides.
Good luck,
Craig

Hey Nelli
As the guys mentioned before, get onto Google maps and it will give you a really good idea of tracks heading out to the creeks. Be really careful of tides and when driving or parking up...have seen some ppl come unstuck! Once again grab yourself a cast net and use live mullet as I find these the best and most versatile bait for a variety of species. Try even further north in the creeks around Ridleys/Condon/Titchilla/Pardoo Station, half the fun is exploring the tracks to get to the creeks and grab a handheld GPS for your first few runs so you know how to get back to the HWY. Dont be afraid of using big hooks either, as most of the fish (Cod/Bluenose & Threadfin Salmon/Trevally/Queenfish/Mangrove Jacks/Sharks and if....if you are lucky Barra. Keep it simple as Brucesta said...80lb mono trace, swivel, ball sinker size depending on tidal movement and 6/0 hook and your away. If you have or paln to get a boat...the creek fishing is pretty good once you get some local knoweledge. If you are really keen grab yourself some soft plastics and throw them around while your live bait is having a swim. Make sure you lets us all know how you go!
Good luck mate
