nice Yellowfin Whiting

Got sick of the missus nagging me on how long its been since she has had a feed of whiting so I chucked Her new rod in the boat, the dog and a handfull of prawns and put the boat in for a run down the channels for the bottom of the run out tide.

Anchored up at a junction of two channels and lobbed the first cast into the shallows on the far side and slowly worked the bait down over the edge into deeper water. Hadn't moved the bait more than 4 feet when bang and off it went, number one whiting on its way in to the icebox. Got another one after 3-4 casts then those mongrel spiky yellowtail bloody things moved it.

Upped anchor and moved to the next junction and in no time had 4 more in the box, enough for us for a feed so it was off home.

6 lovely big whiting in less than one and a half hours since leaving home, can't complain about that.

Bait

If I had my way they would have been bait. Any fish with bones thinner than the thickness of a matchstick is bait IMO.  And the missus knows it too so she's lucky this one time.

Nice Fat Carnarvon Whiting

Thu, 2010-08-05 13:43

Some nice fat whiting there carnarvonite.

I used to send a lot of time out on Pelican point with my old man when I was

a young tacker .......he loved chasing whiting .

When I was older ,out on the prawn jetty or the mile jetty chasing bigger stuff.

ah ....those were good days .

Mmmm, whiting. Need to find

Mmmm, whiting. Need to find somewhere down here I can find 35cm+ YF's. (i'll even settle for good sized sandies).

Are they the same species we get down here in Perth? They look a little darker but could just be the areas they were in were a little diff to ones i've seen from Perth waters?

So what fish are going to feed on your next (hook laced) whiting haul?

Not sure

Thu, 2010-08-05 14:43

I'm not sure if they are the same yellowfin whiting you get down there, though the biggest whiting I've ever seen came off a shark set line. Used to take a run out on a shark boat when I was in high school. Leave Friday afternoon after school and back in on Sunday. It would have been nearly a metre long silver whiting caught on an 8/0-10/0 hook out behind Naturaliste reef. Even the old skipperof the St Nicholas, Angelo said he hadn't seen one that big in 40+ years of fishing.

Was hoping the weather gods were going to be good today for a run out to the islands, but Sunday, Monday or Tuesday look good.

Scored a bonus off one of the prawn trawlers, 3kg blocks of broken prawns, small crabs and a variety of little fish, all nice single hook sized baits. The day wasn't wasted after all.

Meter long whiting? Thats

Thu, 2010-08-05 15:40

Meter long whiting? Thats not huge, thats bigger than huge. Though, without knowing any other details, would think it could be one of these instead? (though they live in WA, not really a sub-tropical species...)

Silver whiting as far as I remember is another name for southern school whiting. Max size something like 40cm, so at 1m, it doesnt sound like a mother of all schoolies, maybe a different (even unknown?) species or perhaps a mutant fish (in some animals, a defective gene can lead to continuous growth as the hormones telling the animal to stop growing dont work properly).

Would be interesting to get more details.

And yep, trawlers are good for doing a bit of on-ocean trading Laughing

(We got some scallops off a trawler at the abrolhos and damn they were fresh and tasty)
