Night Fishing in Cockburn Sound

Hi guys, new to this forum so please be gentle.

Going with a mate tonight in the sound and was wondering if it's a spot that produces much at night? I realize it's a big area but I'm new to boating and he's recently moved over from east coast and doesn't know it very well.

Should we planning to crack a few reds at home instead haha?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

You wont find the spots by sitting at home cracking a few beers, mullies have been showing well, you just have to find them.

Thank you!

Is it beneficial to berley up just as you would any other time of day?

Does trolling prove fruitful at night?

Apologies for my ignorance but best I get the basics out of the way and then try to improve my fishing!

Yes, berleying up is always beneficial.

Especially at night time.

I can't comment on trolling at night as I haven't done it myself before.

My tip for you is to fish around sulphur bay this time of the year.

Get out now and catch some squid before it gets too dark and start fishing at dusk.

Enjoy.

Try and heavy chain lock your trailer to tow hitch cause everything is fair game to the meth heads prowling our boat ramps at night

keep off the bottom

When in the sound it may be best to keep your baits off the bottom as you will pick up heaps of banjo's and other rays. If using a paternoster rig or something similar, drop the weight to the bottom then come up a a meter or so. I free float pilchards out the back of the boat and cube up bait as berley..

Get out and give it a crack mate..

Thanks guys.We did that last

Thanks guys.

We did that last night....every 15mins or so we threw a few cubed baits over to keep the little stuff around hoping bigger ones would also come close.

Not much luck last night apart from a poor mans lobster fish and a 1mtr bronzie oh and heaps of herring.

I was using a snapper rig but the bait kept being taken by small stuff so was left dissapointed.

We went to Sulphur Bay as per mallesh's suggestion and found a few reef ledges and the fish finder was showing heaps of activity so wether or not we were doing something wrong, the fish just weren't hungry or the activity was not fish haha?

It was a great spot buffetted from the wind....it was choppy heading out there but once we arrived winds were right down so thanks for that mallesh!

Is it worth throwing out a livie too?

Farout, I have so much to learn but I'm excited about winter fishing on its way.

Just trying to stay positive and keep telling myself eventually we have to have a good day. Atleast with every poor outing new things are learnt!

Two fish I really want to land are a decent snapper and a solid Sambo.

Salmon

Wed, 2016-03-30 10:03

You will find heaps of Salmon around over the next couple of months. I got a few on Monday at Mewstones. When out on the sound just look for birds working the water or a pile of boats in a small area and that's where the salmon will be. They take anything when they are on the bite so there is nothing special in catching them.
