non slip coating for new deck
Submitted by rtomkyns78 on Wed, 2017-10-25 15:15
I have to replace the plywood deck in my 4.85 aluminium cuddy, I plan to use the 12mm marine grade ply which will be painted with a non-slip coating and then use the rubber matting over the top. I have looked into the Norglas products but they seem pretty expensive is there a cheaper alternative to a non-slip marine grade coating. I have searched the site but most advice was for glass boats or for people who wanted carpet. Any help would be great, Thanks.

normal paint first coat and
normal paint first coat and while still wet sprinkle course beech sand over it.not too much tho. once dry wash off excess then apply a second coat to cover the sand. cheapest non slip and it works. used that method on a fishing boat years back and heard of it being done many times over the years

I've done that lots of times over the years
last time i did it,on my current boat, flowcoat rolled on, coarse sand sprinkled carefully. Hard to get the distribution really even. Waited until it went off. Brushed off excess sand, then light layer of flowcoat rolled over the top. Really non-skid and not hard on feet. Only downside is that you will get little dark spots all over it as the top layer of flowcoat wears and exposes the aggregate underneath, no effect on non-skid qualities.
Or see my post at the bottom, that would be my personal preference now.

Kiwigrip
Kiwigrip is what you need . Whitworths or Yachtgrot will sell it. If you wanna go super cheep use paint n sugar. Paint surface sprinkle white sugar for a nice happy underfoot feeling or brown sugar for aggressive grip . Let paint set wash off sugar with a hose, sugar dissolves and hey presto nice new mon slip deck.

There is yet another way...
..there always is. I did a new fish cleaning table top a while back, and used a method i had seen described for doing a fibreglass boat deck. It used flowcoat--roll it on with a big roller, the, as it is starting to go off, roll it again. This has the effect of lifting the smooth surface, just keep doing it until it stays up. Photo below. I was so impressed with this that i would not hesitate to do a boat deck with it. If you find you have lifted it too much, and it is too rough on bare feet, a very light going over with an orbital sander would take the high points off. Worth a look.
