Divers
The guy I work with up here does commercial pearl diving and says that it knocks you about like no tomorrow. Killer headaches, blood noses, pressure related tiredness. Doesn't sound like a job for the faint hearted even though the money is great.

Does anyone remember that story about a couple of Aussie commercial divers who landed in some toxic mud (chemicals, mercury etc). Really stuffed them up big time, went from being super fit guys to medical basket cases. Very sad.

commercial diving
Yeah the full on commercial diving is not for me.
I have my part 1 quals and will more than likely do my part 2 next year which will mean I can so surface suppllied to 30m. But that is all I need for my work.
My mates have their part 3 and are getting lots of work and the money is pretty good and a couple of them are thinking of going part 4 (sat diving). As for me I would never go that far - I value my standard of life and the long term damage caused by sat diving can really stuff you up. Also it can be very, very hard to get into - there are only a few real good sat divers and companies will quite often only employ them. These guys work as a team and dont let new peolpe into there little mob.
There is shitloads of work around at the moment both for commercial diving - also heaps for scientific diving. Depends what you want to do.
My job is great and I love it but it certainly has its moments where you would rather be somewhere else. Such as 30+ kt winds 20 deg water and zero vis. But it all adds to the experience. Also doing 20 odd dives a week kind of smashes you by the end of the week.

Commerical divers deserve
Commerical divers deserve every cent they get - dangerous work.
I wouldn't want to turn my passion into a job though! Mind you scientific research diving would be good fun - in tropical settings though. Great little segment on Catalyst last night about whale shark photo id matching - now there is a nice diving job.
