Outboard troubles

Hey guy's
Took my boat ou today for the first time, put it in the water and it kicks over but then suddenly conks out. It was either that or it would rev a little then as soon as I put it in gear, either forward or reverse, it would conk out instantly. I'm hoping this isn't a massive problem. I'm thinking it could be a compression issue?
Any help would be great.
Cheers.

Check your plugs.
I had similar issue the other day would only idle in high revs or conk out. Turned out to be fowled plugs

Fuel or carburettor problem
I 'm guessing it's a fuel problem as trymyluck has said (like it's old fuel if it's a two stroke) or you have a problem with the carburettor jets clogged up and the engine can't get enough fuel when you put the revs up.
With two stroke fuel if it has been kept for a while it becomes hydroscopic and is contaminated by moisture (water).

Cheers Snowy82, Ill check the plugs out.
Meglodon, it can't be old fuel because as mentioned, I put in new stuff in this morning before I left. When I did give it a few pumps before hand, it didn't seem to go hard and it seemed like the hose was leaking somewhere.
One thing I should've mentioned aswell is the killswitch cord didn't seem to be on 100%, Would the motor start in neutral if the killswitch wasn't working correctly? and then die when put into gear?

Sounds like air leak then
It won't start at all if kill switch is off.
An air leak will do just this as it's getting fuel to start, then running out of fuel dude to air leak possibly
change it bulb and check lines and connects
