Paternoster Rig

Hey guys,

Im fairly new at ocean fishing. When bottom bouncingfor jewies etc in 70+meters of water what strength leaders do you use in your paternoster rigs?? im heading up to jurien bay in a week and wanted to make some rigs before i went. My main line is 25pound mono and im going to be using sie 8/0 gamakatsu octopus hooks. prob run a snelled pair up the top and a single hook further down the rig. Any suggestions on how to imporve this rig and what pound leader i should use would be really appreciated.

cheers guys.

80lb Min
I use 80 on paternosters, and 60 on driftbait rigs. In 70m you could probably go 100lb. I use Black Magic stuff but there is plenty of good stuff out there.

Are you planning to run a smaller hook on the bottom rig. If not, then why not just go two hooks.

The best swivels i've found are the two way owners/shoguns. Twists are much easier to get out and I get them less.

I posted up a guide for snelling the top hook before, and use this snell for the bottom one. Never had one loosen (even in 100lb)

80 to 100lb for me...I'll only use those 3 way swivels if I need to have snells on my droppers for large baits or if Im crimping 150-200 for deeeep stuff.

Not to sure about the 25lb

Sun, 2008-12-07 11:44

Not to sure about the 25lb mono out deep . you will miss a lot of the small touches , if you can go for braid we use 30lb pen pursuit with a 100lb leeder if you are new to fishing and have not caught to many bigger fish ,i would maybe go to the 50lb braid ,as you get some good size fish out that way .And i would be a shame if you were getting busted off all the time..

rig

paul

my reel is an okuma salina SA-80 and i just bought anther spool and got it done up with 50 pound braid. So would you reccomend using that instead of the 25 pound mono? makes snese i guess. The rig i have made up is with 100 pound line. Its got one of those double swivels at the top with a pair of snelled gamakatsu (size 8) hooks in a 50cm leader. 60 cm down from that swivel on teh amin line of the rig i have another swivel with a single gamakatsu (size 8) hook again in a 50 cm leader. Then off the other part of this double swivel i have my sinker on a 60cm leader. So its a paternoster rig with a snelled pair and a single hook.

Like most people i made the leaders long enough so that jewies can suck the bait in before they feel resistance and they are just shorter than the other part of the main line so they dont get tangled on the equiptment below (swivel for the top hooks and sinker for the bottom single hook).

The problem is that if the sinker is on the sea floor and my line is tight the top pair of snelled hooks are sitting 4 feet off the bottom. Do you think this is a problem??? Would it be better to be right down the bottom?

maybe i should put my sinker on say a 10cm leader then the snelled hooks would be 50cm further down.

really sorry for the essay just had to describe the rig and pretty new to deep ocean fishing.

thanks mate.

Where's the fun in that Paul. I was going to let him fish with mono for a while and then let him ask why he can;t seem to feel any bites. Just kidding, listen to Paul, one of the best fishos on here.

Line stretch

Wed, 2008-12-10 18:52

Using mono at depth with a big sinker on decreases the chance of feeling a bite due to the stretch in the line, with braid there is little stretch and a smaller diameter than mono allowing you to use less weight to get down, hence=more bite felt

Ive heard that for newbs

Ive heard that for newbs using mono isnt that bad of an idea as the common reaction among amateurs to a big take is to strike hard. With Dhu's isnt it better to give line and let them suck it down so with the mono they are not striking the hook/bait straight out of their mouth as soon as they feel something (as they would with braid) or is that only applicable when using circle hooks?

Also do most people run a pair of snelled hooks on their Paternosters, both top and bottom? I'm pretty new to the game and have only been using single hooks on looped 80lb.
