PB Hoo

The weather was too good to be ignored so I took the day off work and headed to Pakin Atoll for some jigging, low tide casting and trolling.

We can only get to Pakin about four months of the year due to the rough seas over the winter period so with a favourable forecast we headed off. Unfortunately even with the new sounder showing good ground holding fish they didn't respond to jigs. I say jigs because I threw a tonne of metal in their direction and they didn't want a bar of anything. Same same with the casting.

Decided to go for a troll around the atoll and we picked up two wahoo. First one is the first picture. We saw a school and chased that for some smallish skipjack tuna. Unfortunately I lost a brand new richtor skirt to a wahoo hitting the line just before the head. An inch to the right and it would have been a hook-up instead. Didn't even get to land a fish on that one. Sorry Ryan, hopefully the others get some results.

Decided to try jigging again after a completed lap but we got the same result, nadda. Trolled again, three minutes into it we got a double hook-up on wahoo. We brought them in and started to motor off again, 10 seconds into it one of the lures that we left out during the previous fight was hit and hit hard. Eight kilos of dragging was pouring off. Awesome. Landed what is now my PB Hoo at 27lb (I haven't caught that many)- last pic. We ended up with seven wahoo for the day, along with barracuda, rainbow runner and skip jack tuna. Not a bad day off work for sure.

Beauty mate well done. Hoo has been on my list as the fish I must catch before I die since I was a young lad growing up in the UK. Hopefully one day I will get one for myself :-)

Tackle...

Thu, 2010-10-21 18:22

...how heavy was your gear, soupy? We got onto the wahoo at Chrissie Island but it was Tiagra 50's loaded with 80 lb mono and the idea was to winch the fish in before the sharks got them. Not very sporting but was the only way to come away with a feed. I reckon they'd be sensational on light gear but just not possible there.

Gotta love the meat off 'em though...I reckon you get AT LEAST 50% weight in filets, they are very thick, solid fish. And once again, you've given us magazine-quality pics! Well done, looking forward to the next report from paradise!

lb

Thanks Aus, love having quality pics up on the wall so it's definately worth taking the time to get a good one.

I run a four line spread, three with 80lb and one with 50lb. I put my wahoo lures on the 80lb lines and always target marlin on the 50lb. Lots of sharks here two so if a tuna or wahoo hit a lure it is often a race against the sharks here as well. Now that I've got some in the freezer I might run a couple of lighter lines to make it a little more sporting; the only problem is no one wants to lose a lure to a bloody shark. Between a rock and a hard place for that one.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.
