Claire's PB Coral Trout

Wade and I finally hit the water after a bit of a fishing drought......brought about by me as last time we went fishing I was filleting the fish and ignored Wade's advice to fillet with the knife pointing away from me....end result was 2 stitches, hurt pride and never being allowed to fillet fish again!!!

We hit the water at 5am and motored to our favourite spot.  Being a full moon the current was up so we decided to trawl instead of bottom bash.  Wade motored to the top of Bickerton Island in glassy conditions while I monitored the lines.  In 5.5m of water, I heard the magic sound of the reel peeling off, zzzzzzzzzz, and after quickly tightening the drag started pulling our catch in.  There was lots of praise for the skipper after I landed my biggest Coral Trout yet at 52cm.

Happy with our catch and before calling it a day, we threw a few twisties at some bait schools.  Having only caught smaller tuna before (3-5kg), I had some fun pulling in a 6kg tuna - at least this one gave me a fight!

Looking forward to tasting the Coral Trout tonight as I've never eaten it before.  I never ate fish until a month ago when I got hypnotised - worked a treat and am loving eating smoked mackerel!

Yet another great day on Groote!

"Never being able to fillet fish again" sounds like a good trade off for a couple of stitches I reckon?  Nice fish.  You guys didn't take long to find em up there.

Thanks for the comments.  Yes, still keeping Wade on his toes but this was the first time I outfished him in ages (and to prove a point he is back on the water today trawling for Mackies while I'm at work!).  Just waiting for the photos to get sent through on my phone to rub it in!

Groote is paradise and the glassy conditions will only get better as we move further into the wet season!  Glad we moved here!

The trout was delicious!

Russ, up here you are always

Russ, up here you are always guarenteed to catch a fish, no matter what!  Thats the benefit of living in a remote area surrounded by coral reef!  And half his luck heading out fishing on a week day - thats 90% of the reason we moved to paradise!

Best thing is I don't have to wash the boat today!
