PE rated rods and line breaking strain

I have a light jigging rod with a PE rating of 1.2 to 2.5. Max Jig weight 160g.

I understand a PE rating to be the width of braid with an approx breaking strain in lbs of 10x the PE. However with quaity line it may break at a much heavier load... So what has the width on the line got to do with a rod? What am I missing, and what is the max line breaking strain you would put on a rod with a PE rating to 2.5.

I don't understand the PE system of line and rods but would love someone to explain it in clear English without getting all technical about it.

So a rough guide  pe 1 means the braid should have a diameter between .09 to .13 mil  and should break around 10lb so if they say a rod is rated to pe 1 to 3 it means 10 to 30lb some companys have made braid that breaks at say 25lb but they still call it pe 1 thats beacuse the diameter of the braid is as thin as pe 1 (10lb braid) but has more strentgh and will break at 25lb

For an easy guide to remember without confusing yourself just go pe 1 is 10lb pe 2 is 20lb and so on so if your rod is rated to pe 2.5 then run a braid that will break around 20lb pound.

I hope this helps a bit

It was one of those things that I just couldn't get my head around, I'm an old lbs, person or at a pinch kilos but the pe bit had me guessing

also be aware that some slow pitch rods are not designed to be pump and wind style when fighting a fish and that's how the rating might seem very high for a soft rod.. Those rods are designed to be held very low and you lift with the shoulder (not lifting the rod tip) and simply winch with the reel
