Poor Form?

So I'm out with the family on Saturday morning, enjoying some inshore fishing before the wind picks up. The young blokes are getting a bit bored, so I decide to take us in close to the causeway where I know they will catch a trumpeter or butterfish on every drop, just to give them some fun before we call it a day. We anchor up about 20m off the causeway on the sound side, and all is good, kids having fun and seasick Mrs happy to be in flat water. No other boats within 500m, the occasional jet skier cruising past without issue.

Through the coathanger comes one large and at this stage un-named dolphin watching boat. Mrs says "Why is that boat heading straight for us?" and I assure her it will turn. Anyway, as usual, she is right and I am wrong, and the sightseeing boat cruises past between us and the causeway. Came very close to going over the anchor rope (no breeze so it was slack), scared the Mrs, and had us all holding on while the wake fairly tossed us about.

I can't see any reason why the skipper decided to do that, there was nobody else around, and he had the whole sound to move around in. There weren't any dolphins nearby, and his mooring (where I assume he was returning to) was in a different direction. I was simply stunned at the time, so I didn't call them up or react in any way (other than to hold on)

Poor form, or me being over sensitive?

BD.

PS Kids caught loads of trumpeter and had a ball. I got my KG for dinner, so all in all was a good morning.

That sounds like a prick act.  You should call the company operator and let them know of your disapproval

Give them date and time, they'll know who the skipper was. If he was within 50meters and more than eight knots tell them you've sent a complaint to the Department of transport. Always carry a camera with me now, Had a few to many incidents at rotto over the last year.

I'd be calling the company in question and giving them a heads up. Could be inattention could be a knob but let them know.

I would be giving them a call. May be an isolated incidence or does he do it all the time ?? Think the company should know either way

Thanks guys

Mon, 2012-11-12 14:27

Thanks fellas, was thinking I was making a mountain out of a molehill, but general opinion seems to be "poor form".

Sea-Kem, I don't think it was inattention, from what I could see there were 3 guys on the bridge (I know I should have "saluted" them, but like I said I was a bit stunned!)

I doubt I'll take it any further at this stage, as far as I know it is only an isolated incident, and from what I know the operator seems to have a good name around there. Although if it is the same boat that was at the D9 like Chris said?

Anyway guys, thanks for your opinions.

Cheers.

If it's option 2 then they are a worry. Let's hope it's an isolated incident like you say. I knew there was a reason I stayed away from the sound these days.

Ahhh yes, it's all making sense now. Sneaky buggers pinging my top secret Trumpeter spot that nobody else knows about!

A quick check of their website and I see it now reads "XXXX Dolphin and Trumpeter Tours" :)

Just a heads up for all the river fishers, be on the look out for this boat and guard your secret blowie spots.

I wouldn't hesitate about reporting

Mon, 2012-11-12 15:26

Nobody was injured, but what about if the kids, or the missus was. Then next time they do the same and injure someone. Its dangerous aswell as poor form.

Report

Mon, 2012-11-12 16:05

Glad to hear no one was hurt. Seriously I would take the time to at least call the operator. How many 'isolated' incidents have to happen to different people before a tragedy happens. You won't be feeling great if and when that day comes. However if you at least make the effort you can put your hand on your heart and say you tried. JMO.

Point taken

Agree, it would be hard to sleep at night if I heard down the track of a similar incident that ended badly. Spot on Soupster.

I'll be down that way again shortly and will try to drop by the office or boat for a discussion with them. Truly hope they take it on board as constructive rather than consider it a whinge.

Its Perth, you drive with them (try to merge with them), you live amongst them, you boat with them, there's a name for them.......

I would give them a call. That sort of stuff is downright dangerous. I am glad your kids had a ball but if it all went pear shaped, how easy would it be to go fishing next time with them? Near on imposable.

Interesting...

Tue, 2012-11-13 14:22

Sounds like a few have had similar experiences so it might not be an isolated incident? Will let you know their reaction once I have spoken with them.

Appreciate everyones comments, and yes the Mrs & kids are still fine, and happy to go out again (thank god - the alternative doesn't even bear thinking about!)

Will steer clear of any big boats though....

Tommytomato, what was the response from DPI?

If it is the guys i think it

Tue, 2012-11-13 20:29

If it is the guys i think it is theywill act all concerned should you contact them and then proceed to do SFA. They are just as bad on the land as well nearly ran over my missus down near a local jetty and laughed about it when she jumped back and dropped a couple of cans of drink, i was not told about it till a day after to avoid "trouble". Before that a few years back was out on the sound with a mate in his boat we had a few dolphins hanging around as we berlying up catching yellowtails and herring for bait. Up cruises the dolphin boat anchors up along side puts the dive rope in the water raises his dive flag and proceeds to tell us to move on as we were in fitty metres. I personaly have had a gutful of their behaviour, trouble will insure if there is a next time.

We had a phone call back asking for details about the boat and time and date, beside that nothing, all tho I did hear through the grape vine the captain had a very good talking too because it not the only time he has done this, how ever you heard things and you dont know if its true or not.
