We came down that way on the way back from Gnaraloo this year. It was around 5 in the arvo sun getting low and did see a few roos North of Lanno. I'd stick to the Brand Let the semi's clean them up ;)

Roos/Emus

Tue, 2012-11-13 20:38

You do get Roos and Emus on Indian Ocean Drive....but at that time of day it should still be light by the time you join back up with the Brand Hwy. You'll see them coming if they are about. I've done the drive plenty of times and the only time I've had a real drama with the wildlife is coming back late at night when the fog has set in......not recommended.

 Mate, I've driven them roads

Tue, 2012-11-13 21:00

Mate, I've driven them roads quite a few times, I take the brand now every time, not as much traffic, mainly trucks, (no were near as many caravaners) but heaps more over taking lanes, and room to over take, only good thing about the coast rd is the view of the ocean, I live south near jandakot, and by memory it's only about 5/10 kms different in ddistance

Suburb?

Wed, 2012-11-14 07:33

What suburb are you starting off from? From western suburbs its shorter to use the coastal route that Brand hwy.

You should be right during daylight hours, with the bit between Lancelin and Cervantes being the worst area for roo and emus.

Haven't been for a run down to Gero lately so cannot help on what is on the road up my way

i live west coast when in perth, when you own waneroo road you go past two rocks, turn onto military road, head towards the observatory, keep going down military road til you hit the end, turn right...go about 15kms and your onto the brand hwy near gin gin....can get to gero just as fast that way as indian ocean drive......

Orange springs road

Fri, 2012-11-16 21:40

If you turn left when you hit Gin Gin brook road then the next right down Orange springs road and follow it for about 20-25 km until you see a sign pointing to Brand Hwy it will save you about 10km

Not quite the case

Sun, 2012-11-18 19:33

Being from the area concerned Carnarvonite, once you reach the end of military road, you would need to turn left on Gingin brook road and go 5km and then turn right onto Cowalla road. Then go 30km and Orange Springs Road is on your right. All in all it is 1km longer to take this route (and more roos) than to go through to the Brand Hwy on Gingin brook road. However with the speed limits on wanneroo road it is quicker to take Neaves road across to the Brand. (3km longer this way but quicker)

The stretch from Lano to

Wed, 2012-11-14 09:28

The stretch from Lano to Cervantes is definately the worst stretch but nothing too serious. I would be more concerned about the road between Pt Gregory and Kalbarri, especially through the National Park before Barri. That is the worst area, certainly around that time of night.

Cheers Mick

Brand Hway

Wed, 2012-11-14 13:05

Defintely Brand hway. I towed my boat to Coral Bay. had a near miss with a roo late morning. Also the road north of Leeman narrows. had some idiot tourist pull over near the ocean round a bend only option was to cross on the other side of the road. Luckily no one coming the other way. Also no overtaking lanes . Brand is nice and straight.

Only benefit of Indian Ocean drive is no road trains, but grey nomads with caravan can be a pain

Another point

Came down and drove the cruiser from Karratha to Mandurah. Decided to take the Ocean Road for something new. Now it was a Friday night, but stopped 3 times for RBT. What a bloody time waster.

Certainly trying to catch grogged up fishing folk camping along the stretch, but for a traveller just trying to get home it was an extra hour easily waiting to blow the bag.

Leeman, Jurien and the bypass at Lanno.
