poor whale

there was a baby male whale wahed up on city beach 2 day.

it freed itself twice but it got washed back up both times.

it tummy is all red and raw coz of the sand its been laying on.

there is also scratches on its sides and back from where a killer whale has attacked it.

it has been there all day and theyre hoping it will get washed out to night in a rip and if not they might have to euthanise the poor thing.

it is only a baby but it is still 7 tonne.

baby humpback

very sad.  couldn't watch it.  At least they talk about euthanasing this one, whereas the one in Exmouth last week they just left to suffer, sunburn and attack by sharks until it died.

I know it is nature and if we didn't see it, we wouldn't know about it and could do nothing.   A tough ethical dilemma, but hopefully compassion will win out.

Crowd gathers to see beached whale

A huge crowd gathered to see the unusual sight of a beached seven-metre humpback whale on City Beach this morning.

The one-year-old male, weighing up to seven tonnes, struggled and spouted spray and washed up three times on City Beach.

Its struggle was compounded by the fact that the waves were breaking directly on to the shore.

Department of Environment and Conservation senior marine wildlife officer Doug Coughran said the one-year-old male had twice managed to get back out to sea after being washed up on the beach at about 7am.

But it was “wasting a lot of energy and for the first time in its life, is feeling its weight“, Mr Coughran said.

He said it would probably have to be put down.

It had probably been migrating north when it was attacked by a pod of killer whales in an encounter that left it badly scarred from head to tail, he said.

It was unlikely the whale would again manage to get back out to sea but any attempt to help it or euthanase it was too dangerous while the whale was struggling in a heavy shore break, Mr Coughran said.

He said while he and other onlookers were disturbed by the whale’s obvious suffering, its beaching was probably a good sign since it indicated increasing humpback whale numbers off the West Australian coast.

“There have been a few beachings like this lately in and around Perth,” Mr Coughran said.

“It could well mean there are greater numbers of whales out there.”

I really hope it wasn't the one we saw frolicking off Scarborough the weekend before last, although it didn't look too sick when it was jumping out of the water.  That one had a friend....hope it finds its way back to the migration path.

no tow

Mon, 2009-09-14 11:12

yes, you'd think they'd tow it out to sea and tie it to the FADS or something and let the sharks do what comes naturally, but no, the council is bringing in a giant loader and truck and trucking it to the tip, so says the Mayor of Cambridge on radio this morning.  He sounded like he hoped it would drift down the coast for another council to pick up the bill.

Should at least do what they do in NZ and let the locals at it.
Plenty of good burley for all.

Better than dumping it at the tip

yer they are a bit

yer they are a bit silly.

they couldnt tow it out to sea because getting to close is a danger to the people doing it. also it will hurt the whale more.
