Difference do you think they are going to expand a marine park by more than double and not have sanctuary and special purpose zones like they have in jurien marine park etc this can only be detrimental to fishers of all sorts even shore based check the map.
It will be exactly like jurien there will be no take sanctuary zones and benthic protection zones. All new marine parks have a quota area to be totally protected. Directly from DBCA's web site about the extensions.
"Establishing some zones where extractive activities are prohibited allows scientists to carry out long term monitoring of plants and animals relatively free from human impacts. These zones provide important reference sites, for comparison with areas where extractive activities are allowed or where environmental impacts may be occurring."
Its going to turn into a shit fight when a sanctuary zone gets planted right in front of some ware like Alkimos, no matter where they go it's going to be someones fav spot to go fishing or send out a drone for a snapp. They like to take the good bits with plenty of reef too.
Spearfishing from the shore is not allowed in the Marmion Marine Park. We used to go spear occys just north of Mindarie when we were kids so now anyone wanting to take their kids for a gidgee would have to pack a lunch and head up beyong Two Rocks.
with growing population, more boats etc, these sorts of things will likley be the only way forward. I am personally in favour. understand others wont be, but hopefully will mean our kids can enjoy the wonderful marine life we have on our doorstep just like i have.
As you all will be awear the new Marina That is curentl under construction at Ocean Reef has already destroyed much of the marine live or ,at least part of it,the Abolone these have been shown on TV news laying in huge numbers north of the current groyens The WA Rectreational people also made mention of this alarming number of dead Abs laying on the sea floor.I have also heard but cannot confirm that some fish have also died.Until the commencemnet of this new marina the reefs north of Ocean reef had prolific numbers of Abalone & many other marine life forms including crays .This area was/is an A class Marine area for the protection of fish & marine life.but as with many other things Money seems to have pushed all other considerations under the carpet or,in this case the Lime stone groyns I have not ever heard of any approach being made to the inviromental people Nor the Department of Fisheries <who are responsibale for the fish stocks .As I have dived up that way for a number of years in particular the surrounds of Burns Rock.In my dives I have experienced a 3/5 knot current running from the South to the North eg up the coast ,My thoughts are that this current may be the reversal of our Leewine current that we all know runs from North down past Rottnest down the coast as far as the cooler/cold currents of our south coast which in turn causing this current to turn back closer to our coat back up north. That has been going on ever since time began as we know it but we,human build oobstruction that we think will makee our lives better Marinas for boats xample Geograph bay nothing but problems I would love the minisister of Fisheries ,to explain his thoughts.also the minister for enviroment and the people from the Marine Parks so they can tell us what they think about this new marina .Also I own a boat so I am not against marina but I am against the thoughtless outcomes that are seen.

"These zones provide important reference sites, for comparison with areas where extractive activities are allowed..."
reference site = complex shore reef system, comparison site = barren sandy desert. hahaha.
seriously tho, all depends on the detail. majority of the existing near shore marine park is good for line fishing and restrictive for spearfishing so its likely to be an extension of that.

I think the sanctuary areas
I think the sanctuary areas (green) are the ones you have to worry about.

Rac, yes.
Reminds me of the black cockies, some university group claimed there was only 300 breeding pairs left in Australia.
When people pointed out where to look, there was closer to 3000 breeding pairs.
After two years and a recount, did they admit the first count was incorrect?
No way, they claimed that they were the cause of increasing the number of breeding pairs by 10 in only several years.
