Proposed setup for ballooning-Steeppoint

Gents,

Have the following outfit in mind for ballooning at Steeppoint and will appreciate comments on the outfit:

Reel: Trini 16 (10kg drag pressure)

Rod: Wilson life fibre 1pce OH 7ft 8-15kg line

Line: 30 or 40lb braid 300m and 40lb mono topshot.

Terminal tackle: 10-14/0 Mustad Demon circle, snelled, 200lb x 1m multistrand trace connected to 9m 130lb windon.

What size helium balloon for a 30cm tailor, herring, gardie respectively?

Can I fly the balloon out on a 20m trace and then attach to mainline via an elastic band?

It is a one shot at the title scenario and don't wanna pay school fees! Help appreciated. Cheers.

your gonna want alot more than 300m 800-1000m preferable. most of the time the balloon can be 300-500m out.

To light i reckon , normaly people use 30 -50 size overheads to get the line capacity ,and you would want at least 600 to 1000 mtrs of line, you dont need to go as heavy with your wire trace either 100 pound is plenty, you would need the big 90 cm latex balloons and connect your balloon trace to your mainline by a snap swivel.

a bit too light sharktale, I fish 500m of 80lb braid and a 100m 80lb mono top shot.

my traces are around 150lb

the hooks are 3 10/0 gamakatsu octopus and a big treble on the end

I reckon your reel may be a bit small for that capacity and your rod should be 15-24kg

90cm balloons are the go

Why so many hooks (I assume it is a large bait - 30-35cm tailor)? What is the ideal rod length for around the cliffs, around 7-9ft?

Along with other ballooners the go to bait is gardies so that might give you a better idea of rig length. Tailor between 35 and 40 are also good along with bull herring small tuna or blue mackeral.
My old balloon rod was a cheap 7 footer and was fine. Now I have a 9ft LBG live fibre the extra distance can help you from getting your line too close to the cliffs. Any longer might be a bit awkward
