Questions re rapid pitch tents and / or Great Central Road experiences
I'm looking at heading to the Rock in twelve months' time and getting there via the Great Central Road out of Laverton.
Originally I was thinking about taking my van but I'm now leaning towards getting a rapid pitch tent and using that instead to give me a bit more flexibility, speed and overall just reduce areas for things to go wrong.
I'm chasing experiences using these sorts of tents - have you used one / do you own one, how do you find them, any brand recommendations (I'm leaning towards the BlackWolf maybe OzTent models) etc?
Also if you've done the Great Central Road how did you find it. I'm in a 2009 Prado which is at home on dirt (although that's a few hundred kms at best, not quite the 1,100 of the GCR). If we do it we'll be kitted up and with at least one other party.
Any insights appreciated...

I bought one like this a
I bought one like this a couple years ago and I can erect it in less than a minute. It takes a bit longer to fold up, and can be a bit tricky if you are by yourself.
Are you going alone or with others. The single / double mozzy domes are great to swag in... if it doesn't rain

do it every 3-6 months.
Make sure you get your aboriginal permits.
You can't camp on the roadside only roadhouses.
Can't take booze or shoot the camels.
Plenty do all of the above and get away with it tho.
Have seen a 1970 toyota dyna camper do it but have also seen the rivers come up within
hours to 10 foot deep and raging, then the road becomes one big slop hole.
Take 2 tyres, don't drive over the windrowed sharp rocks seeking a smoother run, sooner or later....POP !!
Tents in camp sites are open to theives.
What have I forgotten......?

My friend brought an Oztent
My friend brought an Oztent RV3 on a camping trip. It takes about 30 seconds to pitch the tent and another 60 seconds to peg in all the guy ropes and another 60 seconds to set up the front canopy. You probably don't need the ropes or canopy if your just going to sleep in it though.
It has a nice high roof, so you can stand up in it without crouching. Also it's actually possible to sleep 3 people. Some tents say they are a 3 man tent but would struggle to sleep 2. We used it in windy conditions, it probably got to 30 knots one night and the tent had no problems.
The only issue I can think of is it's quite big even when folded up so it might not fit in a car boot. We had it on the roof rack.

Bought a Companion Exo tent
Bought a Companion Exo tent pro 480 about 6 months ago. Haven't manage to get out in it yet (have a trip coming up in a month) but have set it up a couple of times. Easy to erect (takes about 5 minutes), sturdy and plenty of room. Got it on special for $800 and for that much, in comparison with the other rapid pitch tents, I'm very happy with it.
Also looked at the Oz RV5 which I really liked but transporting it at 2.2mts long was going to be a bit of a pain. A friend recently bought one though and it really does go up in about a minute and very sturdy. Didn't like the Black Wolf price and it didn't seem as heavy duty as the other two.
Build a man a fire and he'll be warm for the night. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Got a turbo 300 plus. Great
Got a turbo 300 plus. Great tent, excellent quality, lifetime warranty and suits us as a family tent for extended stays with room for the fridge, food table, clothes even a few chairs etc and fits 2 double oztrail self inflating mattresses in the plus bit for sleeping 4 of us. Only a few minutes to unpack and pop up but add a few for the poles on the plus section, if you fit the fly (awning and to fully waterproof it) and peg it all, takes about 10-15 min for one person. If its just 1 or 2 of you and just want a place to sleep quickly the oztent is good but so are swags. You will need a roof rack cos it is long and the turbo has more head room around the tent. Both are quality tents tho, leading the market. I was tryin to decide between the two and really wanted enough reasons to buy an oztent but I would need the extra sides and front panel to have what I have with the plus which is more bucks and prob end up being same if not longer setup time. The turbo ticked all the boxes for us and I got a good deal on it (1000 bucks from bcf last year) and can be used as a quick sleep setup by just peggin 4 corners and popin it up. Oztent have copied the turbo tent with their jet tent and it has a non pitched awning already attached to the tent which I liked but noone stocks them because the black wolf and its lifetime warranty. Took a few trips before I got good at fittin our tent back in the bag. Good luck, lots of nail bighting at the shops lookin between both setup haha

Freedom camping
I've had a Freedom Northern Tourer since 2005 and use it 5 or 6 times a year for 2 to 3 night stays.
It's very good in wind just needs a couple more pegs if in soft ground.
Easy to put up, takes about 5 min by myself just unfold it put the 4 corner pegs in and then the centre pole up.
It folds up in a square of about 700mm the pole comes in half and is around 1.5 m long. It weighs about 20 kg so if its on a roof rack two people would make it easier.
One thing I have thought about but never tried would be a rooftop tent. About the same price and they look easy to pop up. (usually a few on gumtree)

Oztent
Highly recommend, fully erected in a few minutes and durable - 5 different models
They have a good name.
Not cheap but you get quality and high resale value.
Only issue is length when collapsed and in the bag - around 1800mm

Few more responses than I
Few more responses than I expected, cheers blokes.
I've got my eye on the BW Turbo 300 Tim as I've got two kids and that looks like it would work well for all of us. Good to hear the proclaimed set up times are about right. We'll have a rack on so no problems storing it up there... have to give it a good wrapping though to keep the dust out.
Will look into those other models though thanks for the feedback on them.
SpotHound, pretty passionate about the rock or you doing those trips for work? Good info, cheers.
Half hour to go and I'm off to Gero though and out to the islands tomorrow morning yeww! Will work through all this when I get back
