Submitted by maldugs on Thu, 2017-02-09 18:56
Hi guys, what do you reckon? I am 76 yrars old,and have just bought a 4.88 Quintrex seabreeze to go fishing in the river and the estuary, I am taking it down to Walpole next week for 7 days, I can handle it ok and it is easy to launch/retrieve, my kids reckon i am crazy, and too old, what do you think about it ? I am happy.
Regards Mal.

Bugger the kids, worst case scenario they get their inheritance early so get spending!

76 Years young !
Hi Maldugs
Sounds like you're actually 76 years young - not 76 years old
FYI, I am 70 in a few months and I regularly go out with a 76 year old fishing buddy ( 40 to 50 ks offshore) and he mostly outfishes me so good on you and I agree - never too old to live life to the full
Cheers
Eric

Spend their inheritance
Judging by the kids reaction you should spend more of their inheritance as they don't seem to know how to have fun!

There's a guy who's pushing
There's a guy who's in his 80s that goes out solo in the river basically every single day near my parent's house. Tinny is about 4m. I tried to help him retrieve one windy morning and he told me to "F*** off young fella, I don't need help". He's an absolute legend!
Go for it.

You only get one go....
I say Fuck the Nay-Sayers!. It's your life , do what you want to as long as your doing it safely who gives a shit. We windsurf with a guy who is in his early eighties. He sails with a guardian , on the odd occasion the guardian can't make it and we will keep an eye on him. Good on ANYONE who's making a go of their lives... Maybe you could start doing boobie cruises on the river???

Thanks everone
Thanks for all your comments, I am not as agile as I used to be when I had my last boat, BUT, I can still do it, although I launch and retrieve a tad slower, it gives me a thrill to be able to take my own boat out again, won't be bashing the big waves outside like I used to, but just getting back on the water is Great!!!! And another great thing is that my missus loves boating and fishing too. :)

walpole report
Hi guys, thanks for your support, towed boat to Walpole, and stayed at Rest Point, was a great place, as you can leave the boat in the water, ok was a bit apprehensive as the area was new to me, (and my deckie, the missus 74 year old ) did my check started her up and went out into the estuary, boat ran very well, up on the plane quick, and headed out towards Snake Island, dropped the anchor, and within 10 mins we were into small snapper, which we had to throw back of course, pulled up and spent rest of day exploring the area, over the next few days, caught whiting, bream, and my wife caught a monster flattie in the Frankland.
Found out you have to be careful in the Noralup, as is quite shallow in places, (sounder was a bonus) but enjoyed the whole place, and will go back, found out a few things about the boat, changed the trailer lights for LED, when I got home, also replaced the winch with a 3 speed 10.5.1 and strap instead of rope, also rescrewed the drivers seat back to the floor, may need to replace the anchor as it is quite big, the boat came from Albany, and think it was used out wide, as there was at least 300m of rope tied to the anchor?
All in all I am quite pleased with the 4.88 Quintrex, and also quite pleased with myself, as I handled the boat well, and I am happy at 76 years old, have the opportunity to do what I love, I have siad in the past, that I will only use the boat for estuary and river, but I recon I might go outside on a good day, like I used to.
Regards Mal. ON THE WATER AGAIN!!!!!

Good to hear you enjoy it. I used to do landbased tailor fishing on the rocks at Fisheries Harbor in Freo, and I always met an old Italian fishing there with his handline, from memory he was in his mid 80s. I haven't been there for around 3 years, hopefully he stll fishes there and enjoy it.
