Rod reel line combo help

Going to get new spin set up. I'm looking at a stella but not sure what size. I've mostly fished NT so very shallow. Would like to use the combo for jigging and spinning. I was thinking 30-40 lb braid. I was planning on fishing from boats Perth metro, Jurien and possibly some trips to exmouth. I don't want to get smoked but still want the versatility of a lighter setup for smaller plastic. I was looking at Stella 4000-6000. Not sure about ideal amount of line I need but was leaning towards the bigger ones. Would they be big enough for Samson fish and exmouth fishing? Also keen on rod suggestions. Should I go up to 8-10,000? Is that extra drag and line really required?

My current set up is overhead Trinidad Narrow Special 16N, 50lb bionic braid and T curve deep jig 200. I love the combo but went on a charter last year, got bit rough and the reel was only a few wraps from my backing mono. Thinking I would also need to find a smaller diameter line to fit more on.

I also have an heap of smaller baitcasting shimanos and gloomis rods for the estuary stuff but I don't see much use for it in the southwest.

If your primary uses are up

If your primary uses are up north work and sambo jigging then I reckon an 8000pg stella is the way to go.

Of course there are days you can get away with less, but as you discovered with your Trinidad, there are days when you can't.

However I would recommend more like PE5 for those uses.

If however you are looking at 30-40lb (i.e. PE3) then the 8000 is way too big, you should look at a 4000FI or 5000SW. But I wouldnt recommend either of those reels for a dedicated Sambo / up north outfit.

I personally dont think you can find one reel for everything. Ideal world, buy a 4000FI and an 8000SW(PG).

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

With the Trinidad...

...you should be able to find thinner diameter line...I use Varivas Big One PE3 on my little Pro-jigger, with mono backing, and have never had capacity issues. But I never fish deeper than 70m or so. The breaking strain is listed at 48 lbs.

I'd use the little O/H for shallower jigging/plastics, and go the bigger Stella if you're regularly chasing sambos/fishing deeper...as said above, there's no one outfit for everything!

Oh, and those baitcasters will come in very handy if you're into things like driftbaiting/plastics in less than 30m!

I ended up deciding on two

I ended up deciding on two combos. An 8000 and a 5000.  I brought a rod from fishing outdoor world that really impressed me for the 5000.

Venom 10kg crankbait spin 15-40lb. Loaded it up in store and was impressed enough to add it to the collection.
