Night Navigation to be easier at Rottnest
Release date: 30/11/11
Skippers approaching and departing Rottnest Island at night will benefit from the completion of a major upgrade of navigation aids.
The Department of Transport (DoT) recently completed a project to light 23 existing navigational aids at Rottnest’s busiest boating locations including Geordie Bay, Longreach Bay, Parakeet Bay and Parker Point.
DoT Acting Marine Operations Director Ray Buchholz said the revamped markers defined the navigation channels for skippers navigating at night and would significantly enhance safety.
Previously, the markers were not lit and this prompted concern about the safety of vessels navigating the bays at Rottnest after sunset.
Mr Buchholz said the upgrade work was scheduled to address these concerns and assist skippers visiting Rottnest.
The $70,000 project was implemented as part of DoT’s continual upgrade and improvement of the 1300 navigational aids currently under its control around Western Australia.
“While the upgraded markers will provide safer access for all vessels navigating after dark around Rottnest, the boating community must continue to be aware of the additional dangers when navigating at night and proceed with extreme caution at all times,” Mr Buchholz said.
