is Rotto worth ibang for buck???
having just spent a week again on Rotto for Chrissie ( this time taking my sister there to show here the place as well), I can again say it's not much more than an over-priced 3rd world destination these days.
Being made to paying $38 for a Whitting and chips is just plain robbery and then still not having any whitting or barra by 5pm ( sold out) is just poor business skills too over the so called peak period. Dhuie and chips at $45 was over battered and cooked almost dry.....sacrilege
Dive cylinder fills where very slow at the bike hire mob AND hire bikes where sold out most days by noon!
Only two places that were reasonable in price and good service were the The Dome and the pharmacy. One places was charging $100 for a beach umbrella, and the pharmacy had them for $39!!!! WTF.
We could not get a set of kids diving flippers at the General Store in Thompsons Bay! Only thing well stocked on the island was booze & post cards in most stores!!!
If Rotto is our show peace destination that was meant to impress Oprah's mob, then we where surely lacking in many fronts. Thank god for the Quokkas, as they where very so friendly little bunch and always on show.

Rotto..
Love the place to bits and have had so many epic trips there.Agree they are taking the piss with the pricing.I have eaten at quite a few beachfront returaunts and been served crap you wouldnt pay a dime for.Pity when they have the monopoly and they get away with all the tourist dollars. During peak season not many places around that don't unfourtuately.

those hire bikes are a joke. surely they make enough money to upgrade from the pieces of $hit they trot out. but if people will pay it......
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

I keep hearing about the
I keep hearing about the millions being spent by shop owners and authorities on the island, but I'm battling to see where it all went!
my advice to all is, take your own pedal-bike, own food and gear, then you wont be disapointed. It's a beautiful island and classic white clean beach's that save the day every time.

stayin at rotto at the moment
Gotta agree with most of those coments, great place and will always love it but major problems with the way things have gone comercially.. great place if your self sufficient. waited 45 minutes for two tank fills today, $6 for a loaf of bread, $5.50 for a pie at the bakery,$6 a kilo for apples 9 bucks for a pineapple! hour and a half wait at the pub last night for two mains and afterwards took jac for a walk for icecream aristos is charging $4.50 for tiny scoop of icecream in a pissy little cup, living on a 6m cuddy for 4 days were reliant on public toilets and showers.... which havent had the quokka crap or the floor cleaned out of them for two days.
On the plus side had some awesome diving and will always come back, just wouldn't pay top dollar for housing, why would you when you could go overseas for the same price and have your room cleaned, fresh sheets daily and waited on for the same price

yip we too got ripped off
yip we too got ripped off with the ice cream at Aristos, I went WTF when she told me the price of three little cups with two scoops in each!!!
Rotto needs some public intervention in it's management and control. It use to be the average Joe's holiday at home, but anyone but the average Joe can afford the prices now and put up with the sloppy service of the facilities.
Talking about toilets, we had no loo roll by noon on two days at our facilities.

No toilet roll then just go
No toilet roll then just go earlier. Hehehe..
Also first class anchorage hey Tony..Worst part is you don't get to choice your neighbours..Hehe
My beef is similar to Tony's although i love two general stores and the surf store. (all the same owner though)
Buss service is good but my beef is tying up tenders. My little tender that is 2.3 can go on the beach but my 4.6 mtr can only get tied up on 5 different 20 minute loading areas. SO if you look at that there is only 5 areas that are 20 minute loading areas on the whole island. For every single boat that is over 3.5 mtrs..???? That is a joke.
The walkways of the beach in Longreach were simply coming apart, everywhere. the jetty in Geordie was dam dangerous, the Main ferry terminal is collapsing. Were will it end.
Dive shop closed, the cafe in Geordie closed, the amusement park thing is on the way out.
I'd love to know were my fees go every year. Especially as i have to pay for my own mooring services.
Don't want to whinge as i will keep going back. BUT if the island sewage packs it in like i keep hearing than the island may actually get closed to tourists. That would be a shame. Scary even if you had a business there. For instance the General stores just spent 3 million dollars upgrading facilities. Imagine if they then closed the island..I'd be pissed..

Haven't been to Rotto
for 20yrs, seems nothing has improved. Love our on site van in Leeman, beautiful clean beaches (when the weed has gone) can fish on beaches and nobody around.
I too still love Rotto as used to go with my Aunt & Uncle for holidays 40yrs ago, beautifull, can always remember the quokkas coming in the bungalow in the morning, so cute. Having a lovely pier and fresh bread from the baker, no it seems impossible for people to eat on Rotto, very sad really.
The government wants us to see WA or Australia what a joke, if you guys have experienced the food prices, accomadation is substandard, now wonder we all go to Bali or Thailand.

Rod, you right about the
Rod, you right about the walkways, I saw four great big open holes in the board walk steps down from the toilets! in one place some one had placed a rod to prevent anyone putting a leg through the whole. The whole boardwalk system is rotten and must be in breach of several OH&S acts if it was a private facility.
I heard a couple at The Dome say the Tourism brochure was all nice & glossy, pity the island facilities were dull!
thats sums it up hey!

rotto is designed for people
rotto is designed for people with big boats and lots of money.
Its no longer a 'reasonable priced' holiday destination, and the service is well below average. It's quite sad actually.
You go over ther and see these large boats moored up everywhere, which obviously means people still enjoy rotto, and there is plenty of money floating about, but the 'arverage person' is forgotten. Im not 100% on the figures, but i know rotto was running at a loss for years apparently, and has now been completely turned around, and now back in the black, in a big way.
If the gernal store can spend $3 mill on a face lift, why cant there be money spent on other things, or reducing prcies in some areas. I for one, dont have a problem paying a premium for a service, if the service matches the price. Rotto's service doesnt.
Am going to get my rotto landing fee soon for the boat, and give it a crack, however i will be self sufficient on the console. Does anyone know if you pay the year;y fee for the boat, if that includes landing costs for those onboard?

Actually Bodie the Island
Actually Bodie the Island authority said to all the local business that they had to spend the money to keep there leases. So the idea is for the local business to spend money so it looks like the island authority is spending up. Thats Why Bret heady pulled out. They told him he had to spend 1 million. Sadly though the business is just not there. The dive shop, the cafe in Geordie all said too hard and pulled the pin. The general store's, the bakery all could see the value so they spent up. My point is that the island authority make $13 from every person that lands on the island. Were is that money going? Many of the business are also now asking that very question.
Yearly landing fee's pay's for as many trips with as many people so well worth it really. IMHO
