Safe or crazy?
Hi guys,
Just got back from Karratha fishing trip. One thing i want to know is..
We were fishing the back of legende Island..
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Without fail every cast resulted in shark hook ups, mako's ,spinners, bronzies, tigers, reef sharks. We tryed our best to get red throat up as quick as and had up to 4 BIG sharks fighting each other for it. One landed on the back of the boat. We only stayed here becuse it was the only place shelterd enough.
The next thing shocked me. Some guys rolled up next to us, got into wetsuits and two of the four hopped in the water. Now these sharks wernt just hungry, they were in a frenzie and they were all over 6ft, one would of gone 10ft easy.
They didnt have a dive flag, we told them of how many sharks were there but they didnt care.
Im not to clued up with diving but wouldnt this be almost suicide?

sharks everywhere when your diving. you just cant always see them...
if u boys werent there and the other boat rocked up, they would have gotten in anyway with the same amoutn of sharks..

not crazy
I agree with black gen.
I'd get in - no worries. Doesn't take too much diving in the Pilbara and Kimberley to realise that the sharks aren't interested in divers. They might swim by for a quick look, but then you won't see them again.
I wouldn't swim around your baits, but I'd happily dive not far away.

The fish bowl
For many years the location you were fishing was considered a no no - and having dived it on several occasions as a visitor I can understand why - yes it is alive with sharks , it is also one of the most spectacular wall and cave dives up that way - masses of fish, huge schools of batfish and those big eyed things with filament fins .............stunning
Might I suggest you leave it for divers to enjoy and retaijn the long held convention not to fish that small area as there are plenty of far more productive places fishing wise.
And I am a mad fisherman as well - but truly this should be a dive only spot and no straight hooks either.

Yeah we wanted to go try
Yeah we wanted to go try different spots but it was the only real shelterd part out that way. Yeah i put the go pro under the water and seen the massive schools of GT's etc. So good. Next time we will go elsewhere

Or thow on a mask and snorkel
and get a bit more close up for a look.Or you can just lay about on the bow of the boat in a bikini and sip on your vodka cruisers.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Safe as a house IMO
Apart from GW I would be scared of black tip, white tips and possibly even tigers (but a bit more attention to these). Tigers have a fiercer reputation than they deserve and I have seen some docos where a guy freedives with his "pet" tigets in South Africa somewhere. Tigers are opportunist feeders more than hunters like the GW, and we do look like a seal. Even then most GW attacks are mistaken identity.
Tigers do not actively hunt like GW as far as I am aware and strike when opportunity knocks, like a dead whale etc. From a site "While the tiger shark is considered to be one of the sharks most dangerous to humans, the attack rate is surprisingly low according to researchers"

White tips highly territorial
Drop their pecs to strongly signify their annoyance at you being there - had to fend off with a camera housing on several occasions diving the drop off at Rowley Rock, but the nurses there are special as are the vw sized cod / grouper

That area was ALWAYS considered "no fish"
I accept that is was an unofficial designation but in the past all who fish the archipeligo respected it as an exclusive dive site - I have dived it many times whenever I got the opportunity to get up that way - a VERY special dive and yes it crawls with sharks but the caves, formations and massive schools of small fish make it a very special place.
I hope you respect the unofficial designation and stop wasting gear

I dive / spear out that way
I dive / spear out that way affair bit. I see a shark nearly everytime I shoot something. Like the other post I would only get out of the water for a GW. Hope the bloke who got bit is ok. I wonder if or anyone knows if he was using a shark shield or not?
