Salmon Holes --> Dead Mans Rocks name change

This was suggested by another member (credit to TryMyLuck). The more I think about it the more this makes sense. I've just written to Albany council, The Saturday West, The Sunday Times and The Albany Advertiser to put the suggestion forward. Anyone else fancy contacting them? Warning signs clearly aren't working. Perhaps changing the name from something that positively encourages visitors to put their lives at risk there to something that gives a true impression of how dangerous it is would make a difference. A long shot maybe, but surely worth a try.

It's the dept of parks and wildlife that you would need to contact as it's part of a national park - has nothing to do with the city of Albany, although they might want to get behind the idea as they won't want to see it happening.

It's not a new idea (sorry trymyluck) as lots of other names have been mentioned in the past with "death holes" another common one.

Gotta be more creative...

Sun, 2015-04-19 02:28

...death holes/dead man's/etc will still attract the "macho/hero" element, and potentially even more risky behaviour.

Embarrassment rather than threats will more likely have the desired effect. "Bum Holes" or "I Like Farm Animals Rock".

Missus/mates: "Where have you been all day?"

Fisherman: "Bum Hol...oh, no, wait...ah screw it, I'm not going there anymore."

City of Albany

Sun, 2015-04-19 12:44

I dont know how much say the City of Albany would have in this but they may not be very enthusiastic. Salmon holes is an appealing name for a tourist destination & helps promote the town. Arsehole creek or whatever unpleasant name is going to be suggested might not sit well with them.  Im easily old enough to have become cynical about humanity & if you are serious about putting forward a name change, i reckon you should be pragmatic about it.

I can see your point

There are already some quite off putting names along that coast coast though:
Misery Beach
Hanging Rock
Black Rock
Foul Bay
Mount Belches
Hellfire Bay

Got me there

Never the less, I cant see them changing an existing name to any thing like those. There are plenty of familys who will enjoy the beautiful scenery at Albany & many of the locations down there are deserving of an attractive name. The problem with Salmon holes is that the name says its a fishing hole. Im sure its not the only location thats dangerous

I've fished there but not for many years, but when i fished there the people used to just fish the beach wait for the salmon to come through the channel cruise the back of the reef then come down the beach...no ned to risk your life there they come straight in front of you on the beach

Saw a suggestion to take out the carpark and the stairs, put it back to 4x4 and a big walk to the rocks.

Saw that 2, think it is

Saw that 2, think it is heading in the wrong direction. Why make it harder to fish for people with 2wd's? I think they should close it off when the weather gets rough and maybe even make it compulsory to have safety stuff - rangers love giving out fines! make the fines pay for even more safety equipment!

We spoke to the police, media and parks and wildlife today while we where there doing some filming for the media and rec fish west. No matter what happens some will disagree but for now raising awareness is the best we can do until a more permanent solution is organized. Closing the spot will just shift the problem somewhere else as it's the mentality of people making these choices not so much the location.
